Questions and Answers
about 3 weeks ago I wnderwent surgery for my back. Since then I have been put on Neurontin 600 mg,? and I have gained 15 pounds. I am not a heavy eater, and have also had trouble with weight gain, but this is crazy. Could it be just all of the fluids, or does Neurontin cause weight gain. This medication really does help me alot, but I just can't understand it....can someone out there help me?

Blah? replied: "One of the side effects of Neurontin (generic name is gabapentin) is somnolence. Have you been feeling 'lazier' or more fatigued than usual? If you do have excess fluids, of course this can be a reason: most of our body weight is actually water. I would think the latter, since I find it hard to believe that just somnolence for 3 weeks can result in that kind of weight gain. Unless you're also on high doses of steroids. Water is heavy. Hope this helps."

Reinhard G replied: "Neurontin can cause swelling. Swelling = water retained in the body, and water = weight. You probably are resting and therefore not burning off any energy, this will also cause weight gain. And of course, you are probably bored, not being able to be active, and maybe eat more because of boredom???"

Started new med regime and afraid. During next 3 weeks go off neurontin and take more seroquel.? 900 mg. lithium; 1 mg. klonopin; 125 mcg. levoxyl. Was on 900 mg. neurontin now down to 600 mg. Was on 125 mg. seroquel now up to 150 mg. Would taking away 300 of neurontin cause break-through anxiety even though I added 25 mg. of seroquel? Wound up taking small doses of klonopin at 6:30 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. to help with anxiety. Does anyone know what equivalent doses of neurontin and seroquel are and how to spread these out? It seems the majority of the seroquel is used to help me sleep so 125 mg is now taken at night along with the klonopin although I awoke after 4 hrs. sleep. My doctor seemed to feel that increasing the seroquel and going off the neurontin was the right thing to do because I had swelling in my ankles and was eating more at night. I also have diarrhea most of the time. Help me! I did call my doctor about breakthrough anxiety this morning. No call back. Recently, anxiety 7 to 10 days before period - every 24 days. How do I know if I'm doing the right thing?

Does anyone have neuropathy in their arm? My neuroligist says the aching pain in my right arm is probably neuropathy. This was a month ago and I`ve been taking Neurontin 600 mg 3 times a day,Arthrotec 75 mg 2 times a day and Ultram ER 300mg 1 time a day and everyday my pain is getting worse. Does anyone else have this problem? For how long? What helps with your pain? I`m a wreck because I can`t sleep or eat. Please only helpful comments . I just got over cancer surgery. I`m 57 years old. They just did a CT and said the pain is not from previous cancer in my neck.

Meg replied: "Yes, I have neuropathy in both hands/arms from nerve damage after years of carpal tunnel surgery. I'm surprised your doctor just diagnosed you with "neuropathy" (which just means you have a disease or abnormality of your nervous system, which is pretty darn vague) and sent you off with prescriptions for pain medication and nothing else. Did the doctor call it "idiopathic" (which means they don't know what the cause is)? If not, they ought to be finding out what is causing the neuropathy, as there may be other things that could help. Find a new doctor and keep trying -- you may also want to locate a pain specialist (your regular doctor can help you with this). Acupuncture can also be very effective with nerve pain. It is also worth a try."

Has anyone had sexual side effects from neurontin? I have been taking neurontin for about two months. My doctors keeps increaseing my dosage. I am at 600 mg 4 times a day. I take it for essential tremors. I have noticed lack of orgasm and wondered if this is what is causing it.

James replied: "I took Neurontin for quite a while, and I definitely noticed sexual side effects. The doctor tried to give me Viagra, but I'm young, so it made no sense. Now I'm off the Neurontin, and it's been a great change -- back to normal."

amyd7795 replied: "I have been having the same problem. I take 1800 mg a day for nerve pain and a couple of months after I started taking it I had trouble. I never had a problem before I started taking it."

Keko replied: "I cant take meds Not knowing what the cause is see if a chiropractor and massage therapist with the principles in the book at the bottom help. Much pain is from muscles below is an example of what may help (based on headaches). Begin with a couple swigs of molasses or a couple of bananas (natural muscle relaxers) daily - magnesium (which regulates many things in the body) and potassium (a needed building block for muscles). Drink at least 1/2 gallons of water per day. Running a body low on water is like running a car low on oil is the analogy the head of neurology at UCDavis told my husband about 10 years ago. Now to the cause - muscles - your back, neck shoulders and head have tender spots. They are knots in the fibers of the muscles called trigger points. It makes the muscles tight which makes them press on nerves and other things causing the pain. The cure - start with a professional massage, (if this does not do it you probably need a chiropractor as well) you will also want to go back over any place you can get to 6-12 times per session up to 6 times per day rubbing (or lightly scratching on your head) every where that is tender until the knots go away. The place where the skull connects to the spine press up under the edge of the skull (to get to those muscles). For more information read The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook by Davies. It teaches what to do and where the pain comes from."

Bi Polar Medication Question..? Help... I'm currently on Prozac (80mg), Neurontin (600 mg 4x per day) and 100 mg's of Seroquel at night. I've gained a ton of weight - even with diet and exercise. Can anyone reccommend a med that is like seroquel that doesn't cause weight gain?? I take the Seroquel at night to help me sleep. I know that meds work differently on people.... Just curious about suggestions for something that isn't known to cause weight gain.

alex replied: "try melatonin. It's something your body produces naturally. I think you can get a jar of like 100 at walmart for 5-10 bux. I have issues with sleeping, and I take benedryl or melatonin...depending on which one I have on me. Melatonin has less side effects...really i think being tired the next day is the only one, whereas benedryl changed your heart rate, dehydrates you, etc."

weldermommy replied: "I used to take seroquel for mania and it made me gain weight too. Also, it made me a bit of a zombie and with 5 kids to raise, I kind of needed to be awake. LOL I now take Zyprexa which is also an anti psychotic. It works so much better for me and there are minimal side effects. However, asking random people for meds advice is not a good idea. Everyone is different and will react to meds differently. You really should take it up with your doctor and try to work out a meds regimen that is right for you. He/she will know better how to assist you. Good luck!"

colagirl replied: "For more subjective experiences about different behavioral and mental health meds, check out crazymeds.com. Be careful with the over the counter stuff and self-medicating- people think melatonin is safe to use because you can get it at Walmart, but some people experience severe hallucinations, rapid heart beat, etc. while using it. Also, Zyprexa can cause weight gain & diabetes. Your best bet is to talk to your prescribing doctor about your medications, the side effects you are experiencing, and your goals (what's important to you) during your treatment. Your psychiatrist should listen to you, and you should decide together whether another medication would be more beneficial. If you have the question about a medication, ask him/her; they have probably been asked it before."
