Jonny T replied: "this is complex"

chives_96 replied: "the thin one would be better for doing flips on."

AK Athletics replied: "I posted an answer in your other post as well but to answer your question again: You know a gymnastics mat is too soft to do back handsprings on when you can not keep correct balance because of the mushiness of the mat and when your hands or feet can feel the ground with your full weight on the mat. Thin mats are the way to go for back handsprings and most other tumbling exercises - now that you have established overall thin / firm foam is a necessity for the routine you should look at whether you want professional grade advanced gymnasts thickness or if you are a beginner and want to avoid injury or for practicing a thicker foam that is a little less sturdy. Read about the differences between 1 3/8" thick and 2" thick mats here:"

Sela replied: "This really has nothing to do with hair. Sorry, I don't have a clue. That's why I'm in hair."

Sky replied: "Thick. The soft wold be soft but might hit the ground."

Rashonique L replied: "you need tew get the thick one because what if you fall u dont wannna get hurt so the thick one seem tew bee ah better choose..........."

DearCourtney. replied: "Thick is firmer, really soft ones that you sink into can throw off your balance. And thick is your best bet to not hitting the ground, the soft on may be soft, but if it is too soft, you will sink through to the ground. Hope I helped!(:"

Angela replied: "It depends on how experienced you are and how comfortable you are doing back handsprings. I think the 8" model is definitely too thick unless you are an older person with brittle bones. ;) Did a quick search on youtube and found this video: He takes a pretty hefty beat down hitting the 4" thick mat and walks away pretty safely. I think in general most gymnasts would use either a 2" thick (beginners) softer polyurethane foam for their mat or even an 1 3/8" thick (advanced) cross-linked polyethylene foam core for their 4 by 8 foot mat because of how sturdy and solid it is move on. I would recommend looking at Gymnastics Mats by AK Athletic Equipment at to find mats that are of equal quality and less expensive. Note: They do not have 4" thick models available online but you can call the toll free number Mon - Fri and get an estimate for a mat at whatever size fits your needs and pick your own color (I suppose in this case pink?). In addition, if you email me I can hook you up with a free 2% Off Coupon Code. Regardless of who you choose to buy from hopefully this was helpful in deciding what thickness to shoot for."
