A.J. replied: "That drug is fairly new. It only got approved shortly before you started taking it. There are multiple patients who i've seen with this problem. most of them were switched over to Zoloft. I found a forum of people tracking side effects, maybe you are interested."
I'm taking CELEXA...any long term experiences? Bad or good? Any different side effects?
So far I'm good with it...a bit of difficulty focusing...enough focus to do THIS at work though ;)
Mary Boo replied: "Name Celexa
Generic name Citalopram hydrobromide
Manufacturer Lundbeck, Forest Laboratories Inc.
First used in Approved: 1998 (FDA), since 1989 in Europe
Family SSRI
Indications Depression, Panic Disorder, OCD, GAD, Social Anxiety Disorder
How does it work? Citalopram increases the amount of neurotransmitter serotonin in the brain by blocking the resorption of serotonin from the synapse, having little effect of other receptors, which is why it is called a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). Citalopram appears to be more selective than other SSRIs, that is, it has less effect on other neurotransmitters like dopamine and norandernaline. This property results in fewer side effects, such as sexual dysfunction, weight changes, and also in a better drug interactions profile. Researchers also shown that frequency of treatment-emergent manic episodes associated with Citalopram is lower compared to other SSRIs

Celexa (other anti-depressants)- long term impact? I have been on it for about 2 years. I want to ween off of it, basically cuz I don't want to be reliant on it for the rest of my life (I'm 37). Is it too late, or am I going to need it for the long haul?
Girl Interrupted replied: "I dont think that there is much information available on the long term effects of SSRI's in which Celexa belongs too.
Do not stop taking the drug abruptly, and before you wean yourself off it - make sure you see your doctor or your psychiatrist - whichever prescribed the drug to you.
Some people need them only for a short time, others a bit longer, and some people may need to be on and off them over the course of years.
Im a lifer...."
Cat S replied: "You need to talk to your doctor about this because whether you need maintenance medication in the long term or can be weaned of celexa entirely depends on the type of condition you suffer (IE. whether the cause of your illness is biological in nature like melancholic depression or grounded in psychological causes like those that are linked to stressful events in a person’s life, etc).
SSRIs are not addictive but weaning off the medication may cause you to experience withdrawal symptoms, which speaking from personal experience is best done under medical supervision from your doctor or shrink. The side effects from withdrawal are usually short term in nature...such as nausea, dizziness and sleepiness.
If you come off medication, you may experience a whole array of different symptoms which would be best discussed with your doctor as each person's response is different as is the effect of different medications.
Some long term effects of various SSRIs I've had included both weight gain and weight loss, headaches, loss of appetite as well as binge eating, constant nausea, dizziness, and ataxia. However I am drug sensitive and once I came off these medications, most of the symptoms righted themselves and my metabolism returned to normal when it came to food and weight gain/loss. This transition period can be managed with healthy planned diet and regular light exercise...
The downside was the depression returned as the medication was what was helping me to manage my moods. Later I was diagnosed bipolar type 2 and I'm on a long term medication regime of tegretol/lamictal/cipramil to deal with my episodes are mixed affective in nature."
Are there any serious short term, long term, or side effects of Benzodiazepine's? I was taking an SSRI a while ago, but stopped because of Sexual Dysfunction. My doctor wants me to try Celexa (citalopram) because months later my anxiety has returned. I'm worried that it will too give me Sexual Dysfunction. Would a benzodiazepine be better for me?
raymondcasillas68 replied: "xanax works great for me! no sexual dysfunctions and the only side effect is that it may, not will, cause dependency. it depends if u follow ur dosage and keep it in control. wellbutrin, soloft, paxil and a few others caused me ED and didn't do the trick for me to dealing with my anxiety attacks and agoraphobia. i take xanax and it works well for me. some doctors follow the pharmaceutical mainstream and prescribe other new medications with tons of side effects. they also say u'll grow a dependency on benzodiazepine, but if u have the condition and need the other medication, won't u be dependant on that medication too? so unless they can give u a medicine that will cure ur anxiety for ever, I'd go for the benzo, it is very safe, no noticeable side effects and it's time tested."
Can antidepressants lose their effectiveness over time (5-10 years)? What about long-term side effects? Celexa is the drug. Taken for over 7 years. Do doctors even know how long drugs like this can be taken without losing their ability to regulate seratonin? On low dose for 5 years (20ml) and seemed just fine. Now having occasional days that feel like the "D" is coming back.
mompoo replied: "It is possible that you have become used to the medication and might need a change. Talk to your Dr. about it. He won't change it if he thinks you are still doing O.K.."
baby girl replied: "I don't know about Celexa specifically, but many drugs do become less effective over time as you build up tolerance to them. However, if the drug has been working consistently for seven years it is unlikely that it would spontaneously stop. More likely, something else has changed that is making you feel somewhat depressed. Maybe you're stressed out about something, or there's some other reason you might be feeling kind of bad. However, you should talk to your doctor rather than posting here on Answers cause even if we sound like we know what we're talking about most of us actually don't."
tls71_2000 replied: "I do not know anything from a professional stand point, just from personal experience. I have noticed that antidepressants seems to lose their "oomph" after awhile. It seems like Dr's want to keep using what has always worked. I would certainly tell the doctor what is going. You sure don't want to go backwards."
Arua replied: "It's a common problem for meds to stop working after prolonged use. Many of these meds haven't been around long enough to have the data of how long they can work. But its possible that a dose adjustment will be in order."
pinkflower18 replied: "yes after time your body becomes accustom to the drugs and stops working my dad is on antidepressants and he is always changing drugs because hes had it so long they are always mixing drugs. long time effects would be liver damage because of all the meds."
panic attacks and Celexa meds? I went to the doctor today and have been diagnosed with a panic disorder. He prescribed xanax for short term use and celexa for long term use. I am scared to take the celexa after reading the warning labels. Have you used this medicine for panic attacks? If so, what was your outcome?
Any advise on this med would be great.
Thank you in advance.
paperpaladin replied: "OMG. DON 'T TAKE THIS. i took celexa & it messed me up for a week. it felt like i had the worst flu for a week. i had the wierdest side effects.
please don'tt ake this. my doctor is such a jerk about it. he doesn't think that it was the medicine that made me sick, but it was.
don't ever take celexa. it should be taken off the fda. it's horrible."
Martha T replied: "Joanne,
Don't let pills be your permanent solution. There are better ways!
For 3 years I had panic attacks and each time I literally thought I was going to die. I didn't tell anybody about this either. Then, one night, my boyfriend found me hyperventilating in bed and rushed me to the hospital. There, they told me it was a panic attack. They gave me tranquilizers (but I didn’t want to get addicted to sedatives) and the name of a therapist that I really liked. My therapist told me about this program:
He really shouldn't have told me about this program because it cured my panic attacks and I no longer needed to see him.
I kept my appointments with him anyway because I liked talking to him and he also noticed how much more relaxed I was since the panic attacks stopped.
Anyway, hope this helps. Cheers,
Martha"
What are some common side-effects of discontinuing Celexa? I have been on celexa or citalopram for about a year and a half now, and my doctor has asked me to try to taper my dosage to see if I will need to use it long-term. I am almost completely off the medication. I am in the 5th week of a 6 week process, and I think I am experiencing some withdrawal symptoms. What are some common symptoms of having a withdrawal?
Wireless replied: "google it.
bing it.
do it.."
Can you experience withdrawal symptoms with short term use of Celexa? I just finished my 2nd month of Celexa and stopped taking it cold turkey. I have felt "odd" for the last few days and I am wondering if it could be due to withdrawing from the medication. I am just not sure if I could experience symptoms since I have not been on it that long.
Some of my symptoms include:
Dizziness
Headache
Irritability
Unusual sensations in my head
Feeling as though I will faint
Feeling "spaced out" or disconnected from reality
It is impossible to describe the intensity of these symptoms, but it is enough to scare me into thinking that something is really wrong with me. Does it sound like withdrawals and would it be possible considering that I was only on the medication for 2 months?
Kim replied: "it is possably 2 have withdraw symptons from 2 weeks onwards if you are worried go to your doctor"
Tobe_the_hedgehog replied: "my first look at the syntoms definatly look like the symtoms of withdrawl but i would go to a doctor just in case and tell him everything you have been feeling. Almost any medication, if used long enough can give a person withdrawl."
Vote Counter replied: "YES. ABRUPTLY STOPPING the taking of Celexa, a drug closely related to other drugs such as Attenonol, (blood pressure tablet) or other antidepressant drugs, such as Zoloft.
AND will definitely cause the Symptoms you describe and I would urgently recommend that you immediately see your prescribing doctor NOW.
Celexa is for treating Depression and stopping some antidepressant tablets abruptly can have serious side effects.
DONT bother about reading any more Q&A..just go to the Doctor NOW,
OR an Emergency Dept. of a Hospital...NOW.
(even if you are starting to feel better, if thats possible)"
Is Celexa a drug that once you take you will never stop? Seems like all the comments on here about Celexa is that is a long term drug and not just to be taken for a few months. It sounds like going off of Celexa is not easy. Is Celexa a dependent drug?
fifty replied: "No. It is not. My opinion is that it is easy to taper off. Just talk with your doctor about how she/he recommends a patient taper off of Celexa. There may be additional information on this process on the Internet.
Some people on here have stated some difficulties tapering off of some medications (Effexor), but I haven't seen anything about Celexa."
christibro40 replied: "I took it for awhile. a few months, discontinued it when the dr and I felt I no longer needed it, and I had no problems. However that was me. You did not mention what you are being treated for, or at what dose. It is not a medication I would just stop taking, but along with your dr, it is possible if you both find that it has done its job, that you can be weaned off it safely, and go on and live a normal happy life. JUST DONT STOP COLD TURKEY"
