i have been taking prednisone for poison oak and have started getting pretty bad acne on my back and shoulders? can prednisone give you acne...also my face has started getting more acne too... if it is because of prednisone will it start to go away now that i'm off the medication...

Eric K replied: "Generally when receiving a corticosteroid your body may be immunocompromised. This may allow bacterial infections to grow easier. Chances are this acne is due to a bacterial infection. Ask your doctor and see whether a tetracycline antibiotic is right for you. Chances are this acne will disappear with the tetracycline."

prednisone for poison oak i just got a perscritption to 60 mg a day . for 2 weeks but my dosage decrease every other day how long until i see some results i have school pictures they day after tommorw and my eye is very swolle also i can not sleep from the itch

jett727747 replied: "Try some Calamine Lotion for the itch, it's an over the counter topical anesthetic. Other "caine" (Solarcain) type ointments may also help the itching. A topical anti-inflammatory corticoid ointment might help speed things along, call your doctor. Applying ice for short periods to the affected area may help with the swelling and inflammation. (Do not apply ice directly to the skin and be careful not to freeze the tissue) Advill might also help the itch and inflammation - ask your doctor about using these also. Make sure to follow the dosage tapering instructions for the oral prednisone, if you stop suddenly it could have negative effects on your body. Do not increase the dosage either. The largest dose of the oral prednisone is taken at the start of treatment and is when most of the anti-inflammatory properties start to work, the latter part of the dosage is tapered so your body can adjust to the medication leaving your system. Cortisone type drugs by nature do not work overnight, but you should start seeing some improvement soon."

What are the stages of poison oak and how long will it take for it to go away? My daughter has poison oak. She's had it since Friday. She went to a doctor and was perscribed with Prednisone. Also she has been using two creams and a wash. It is badly on her chin and earlobes. It is also on her cheeks, neck, lips, inside her ears and inbetween he fingers. I was just wondering what the stages were and when will it go away. Some extra information: She is 11 years old and 79 pounds.

widewillie replied: "First off please give my wishes for a speedy recovery to your daughter...I know the discomfort/pain/misery she's experiencing. I'm no expert...but I've had poison Ivy and poison oak...and it really depends on how severely she was infected...and how much she may have spread it to different parts of her body directly after exposure (you may see more areas breakout before she recovers). My last bout w/ PO took about 8 weeks to fully recover from...but I think my case was extreme...my friend contracted it at the same time (camping trip), and he recovered in about half the time I did. Don't know if this will be helpful or not....but here it is anyway... Good luck :o)"

russ t replied: "I can't believe it, my dentist told me yesterday that he treated one of his assistants poison oak with a laser and the poison oak went away. Incredible. I would always get it playing outdoors as a kid and when predizone (steroid) came along I thought it a miracle. Of course a steroid isn't good for you. I learned to use immuoak as a precautionary measure. You take it before exposure and it works well. It builds your immunuty. Of course I'm sure you have shown her how to identify the plant and to immediately wash with lye soap if exposed to the plant. Nasty stuff. I feel for her . Check out laser treatment for poison oak. Your dentist (belive it or not) may have the laser."

What should I put on the poison oak rashes for day 8? I touched the poison oak on accident at a park without even knowing it, and it showed up 2 days later so its 6 1/2 days I've had the rash now I just took a shower 2 hours ago now it's starting to flake. Should I use calamine lotion (dry it out)? Or should I use Aloe Vera (moisturize it)? and i Took prednisone the last 2 days, but not anymore today. Cause its not so bad of pain now.

FlowersYes replied: "Take all of the medication as ordered by doctor. This makes sure there is no rebound or residue. Use calamine until cleared except for flaking. Skin can be a little red at this point. If itching is gone use Aloe."

Poison oak almost gone but still itching? I have been on prednisone for 9 days now and my poison oak is almost gone but this mornign i have a few more little bumps showing up and im itch again. Whats happening? could i possibly be getting more?

nscacchetti replied: "call your doctor immediately it could be a bad reaction to the drugs"

I have poison oak all over my body and I have had it for 2 weeks. How long? My doctor prescribed prednisone but it only seems to be getting worse. Please help, I just want this to go away.

kit replied: "oh..um i think it should be gone by now or defintiley going away i dunno cuz i got poison ivy once but not all over my body just my leg and it was completley gone in about 3 weeks. go see a different doctor"

micheleann62 replied: "Either return to your doctor or go to a different one."

♥ replied: "use calamine lotion instead. you can get it at the drugstore. i got poison oak all the time when i was little and this cleared it up very nicely."

momsRN replied: "This is an itchy question, SORRY!!......... Just couldn't help it. Anyways, Benadryl capsules over the counter is a great med for the itching, take as directed. There are many creams to apply and medicated baths to use like AVEENO(oatmeal) bath packets. Solarcaine sprays may also help calm down the irritation. Been there. It is uncomfortable but it will finally go away. Best of Luck!"

POISON OAK!!!!! PLEASE HELP!!! NEAR CHRISTMAS? O.K, so its near the holidays (December 19, friday) and i just got POISON OAK! I just started prednisone, hydroxyz,(which are pills) and triamcinolon (cream) 2 hours ago.. the poison oak is currenly on my chin, eyelid, forehead, cheeks, and inner elbow. since i dont want to have big red blotches on my face during christmas and taking christmas photos can you people please tell me how fast it will clear with my medication, is it contagious, and any home remedies...??? p.s, i got the rash december 17 but irritation did not occur till december 18, at 5:00 pm

Don replied: "Well, your question got placed in Garden and Landscape. My experience is poison oak grows year-round, and is no respecter of Christmas. I'm immune to it, and can actually pull it out of the ground barehanded (not if it gets in a scratch, though). But people that get poison oak seem to have the rash for at least a week, if not more, so I think you better start getting used to the jokes now. You might want to ask this under a medical catergory, instead. From a gardening perspective, I think you're stuck."

lipperloo replied: "i once had poison ivy.from what i know its contagious if its like poison ivy.there might be blister looking bubbles that have a liquid that makes it spead.try some calomine stuff. itll dry up then.like i said it might work if its like ivy.best i know."

Fisherman replied: "your gonna need an ocean of calamine lotion you ll be scratching like a hound the minute you start to mess around with poison oak"

heslin17 replied: "I've had it many times, and bad. For me withe the oral meds it usually clears up within a week. Never tried that cream, but I would imagine it would help w/ the itch. Ivy superdry (over the counter) works pretty fast but I wouldn't combine it with the cream and it burns like a b#*%h when you put it on. Finish all of the oral meds even if it starts looking good. It may surge again if you stop. Follow your Dr.'s advise if it doesn't work fast enough ask about the ivy superdry, but by no means trust my advise I have no medical background. Make sure anything that may have come in contact with the poison oak is cleaned or disposed of, this means tools, gloves, clothes, shoes shoe laces, the oil from the plant can stay on surfaces for a long time. If you are that sensitive all you need is a touch to get it again. If the plant is on your property pay someone to remove and dispose of it . The oil is in the leaves, branches, bark, roots of the plant. Try not to scratch it makes it feel worse... easy for me to say....I'm getting itchy just thinking about it. Good Luck!"

jbw replied: "when i get it i always go straight to the doctor and get a steroid shot 2 days its in remission and gone in a week. thoughs pills take to long"
