Any advice about body pain and weight loss after tapering Prednisone? Was on Prednisone 2 1/2 years, off now almost six months. The moon face is gone, but my leg muscles still hurt, and dieting has resulted in no weight loss. How long does it take?

ladykatie80 replied: "sorry....i'm still on prednisone...although i have tapered off by a lot since i started taking it for lupus. why do you take prednisone? e-mail me if u want to talk! "

Also afflicted with COPD replied: "Hello, Have also COPD, diagnosed in 99, was able to finally shed 30 lbs last year. For muscle pain (muscle spasms) I take Magnesium and Potassium. Keeping active (have to push myself) also helps me alot. If you have access to a Pulmonary Rehab Program, try it, had a total positive affect on me. Please contact me if you wish to exchange more info. Also would appreciate learning anything you have done with positive effects...thank you and Take care and better breathing to you..."

Is it normal to have weight loss trouble a year after taking prednisone? I was on the corticosteroid prednisone for my crohns disease and I have not been able to lose weight. It has been about a year and a half since I was on prednisone. I was on that awful drug for about a year and a half as well. I gained 80 pounds very rapidly while taking the drug and none of it has come off over a year later. I am a very active person- I walk, hike, swim, and lift weights. My diet has remained the same throughout my life and is healthy and balanced.

phyllis n replied: "should have lost some of it -- have to take it sometimes and it does make weight come on, took awhile but have managed to lose 12lbs of it after not using any about 1 1/2 years"

wynterwood replied: "It's hard to lose weight, period. You'll need to do it the hard way. Stopping the drug helped stop the weight gain, but now you need to cut back slightly on the calorie intake to allow your body to lose the extra weight, and then you can start maintaining your regular diet after you've returned to your normal weight. Until then, cut back on your portion size a bit and limit food after 7pm."

m l replied: "Your metabolism is probably all screwed up from gaining it so quickly. Even if you eat healthy, if you have Chron's chances are your body is not absorbing the nutrients in your food like you need to. Your specialist should be able to refer you to a nutritionist. I hope you are on a multivitamin."

sandy m replied: "I also am on prednisone and have been off and on for 17 years. the weight gain that you experienced was not normal caloric weight gain. It is from the fluid that accumulates in the tissues. It is very very very hard to lose that weight gain and it takes a long time depending on how long you were on the steroids(prednisone). Hang in there, it will come off in time, Usually when I finally lose the weight from last time then I go back on them again. What a crappy cycle."

Prednisone and weight loss.? I have been taking prednisone for a few months because i was havin a pretty bad Ulcerative Colitis flare up. I am not sure when the doctor plans on taking me off them but i am wondering if i will lose some weight when he does? i take 20mg every morning.

drankurbhardwaj replied: "prednisone due to water retention leads to wt gain and you are expected to lose after discontinuation ,"

Weight Loss while weaning off of Prednisone? I was diagnosed with Systematic Lupus about a year ago and had to go on a 15 mg of prednisone because my Lupus was fairly active. I am slowly weaning myself off of prednisone. (I'm down to 7.5 and 10 mg every other day) . I currently try to work out 3 days a week, nothing too crazy, but to keep my actively walking and lifting weights. When will I start seeing some progress? Is it possible to lose weight while I'm on prednisone? Or do I have to wait until I'm fully off of it? It's very depressing to have gained 20 lbs in the past year. Any suggestions? Or do I just have to wait it out. Yes--I call the roundness in my face--chipmunk cheeks--its just frustrating to not lose anything while I'm eating healthy and excercising--the one thing I did notice is that now that I'm going down in prednisone I am not gaining any more weight at least--I am staying at my weight. I just hope I get off this medicine soon--its rough.

pvandermeeden replied: "If your face is a little rounder than before it is called cushing's syndrome - a swelling as a result of long term steroid use - as you get he meds out of your system it should diminish. 3-5 days a week of exercise will help with a bit of weight loss and should also be good for your SLE"

dj a replied: "When I was on prednisone I put on weight but when I went off it the extra pounds didn't go away until I went on a diet and began to exercise more regularly."

Shari replied: "I would have to say wait till your off of it. I had the same problem. That stuff is crazy meds. I was hungry and full at the same time! And could eat like there was no tomorow. No wonder it's illegal for sports people to use!"

Extreme weight loss after tapering off prednisone? I had a staph infection on my armpit was prescribed bactrim by my doctor i had a sulfa allergic reaction and developed a rash from head to toe and was extremely sick he took me off bactrim and put me on prednisone 60 mg for 3 days then 50 for one day 4 for one day so on and so forth tapering) i am a mma fighter so weight is a big issue with me and on top of that im worried that something else could be wrong with me but im wondering if it is a result of coming off prednisone a side effect was weight gain although i never had any weight gain i am losing about a pound a day i was about 158 and now about 152 was 153 yesterday.... Is this just temporary while my body adjusts to not using prednisone? looking for a quick answer got a fight coming up this weekend and for what its worth im 19 years old and exactly 6 foot tall

If you have the desire to lose weight its qualities help a lot - but those same qualities additionally help those who are trying to bulk up. Magic! There is a free trial happening right now at , try it, what's the worst that could happen?"

Can prednisone effect your efforts to lose weight even after you've stopped taking it? I've been working out for months. I had to take prednisone for almost 6 months but i've been off of the medication for about 6 weeks and I still can't budge the scale. I work out 5 times a week, watch what I eat. I have no idea if this is still in my system causing my weight stall and can't find any information about how long it effects the body. Can anyone tell me if this could be the cause of my weight loss stall?

Due 09/10 :) replied: "I know that with prednislone you will gain quite a lot of water weight . Its going to take some time for your body to re adjust since you have been on it for several months. My son has asthma and would be on pred for 1 week and would get puffy - it would take at least a week for the puffiness to go down. Don't give up and be patient :) , Please remember though oral steroids will bring your resistance down so be careful not to over do it :) Good luck and glad you are feeling better :)"

Andrea E replied: "If you were taking prednisone for six months, 6 weeks isn't a long time to be off of it. Prednisone is a steroid, and has long term effects. You should really contact your doctor when trying to determine if it is still in your system, they may have to do some bloodwork. You should also try reducing your calorie intake, in addition to eating healthy. But you are definitely on the right track, don't get discouraged."

cyn replied: "Every time I took Pregnisone(steroids) I gained a little weight, due to my eating more.Plus I was aways thirsty. So the increase in my drinking caused me to gain weight. It takes time to loose weight after steroids for me.I got put on them over the years a lot due to my health issues and bad Asthma.I got one thing to ask?Has your vision changed at all? If you do notice a difference with your perrifial(side view) vision. If you do get your eyes checked it.None of my doctors told me one side effect is the increased chance of getting Glaucoma!(check out webmd.com or drugs.com for further info) I now have Glaucoma and my vision is bad(20/70)For the sake of your vision keep your eye's checked out.Sorry to rant about this, but I was pissed with my doc's because there were other opinions they could of taken occassionally without using all the steroids."

What is a good weight loss plan for a 16-year-old? I got off of the steroid prednisone a couple months ago and I never lost the about 40 pounds that I gained. I want to lose a lot of it by summer. I know it is unhealthy so what is the healthiest way to lose weight fast? Most of it is in my breasts, my but and my stomach

liminal_lady replied: "Any plan that gets you to eat less and move more is good. What worked for me was cutting out snacks and going for a walk or bike ride every day. I just ate three meals a day (whatever my mom cooked) and if I was hungry in between I would eat fruit or vegetables but nothing else for snacks. But that is just what worked for me- some people lose weight by doing things like eating six very small meals throughout the day, or counting calories, etc. Just don't believe any of the miracle food claims (acai, green tea, cabbage soup, pomegranate juice) or whatever the latest fad is. Find a way to limit how much food you eat and get more exercise and you'll lose weight."

Tough Love replied: "Good christ the spammers have gone to Town on this thread! The best plan I know of is low carbohydrate, basically a diet of Meat, Eggs, Dairy and Nuts. (Personally the former is a no-go for me due to vegetarianism). So just eat a lot of fats and a lot of protein. Also have vegetables with every meal, preferably green ones, since most root Vegetables (potato variants anyway) have a surprisingly high sugar content. Then couple this with exercise daily for at least 30 mins, slowly increasing the intensity over time. Since you are 40lbs overweight (so you say) this will drop the fat pretty quickly. Remember when it comes to large amounts fo fat loss you come to a point where u just have to knuckle down and get it done. And with a low carb diet the first few days will be the hardest, but it gets easier."

Lisa replied: "I have been through it all and know what's it about. The main thing is to stick in there. You can't be an addict to food and never exercise if you want to live a healthy life and keep the weight off. I've worked out, done every diet, and all types of classes. Nothing works, besides dedication and intelligence towards the subject of losing weight. First, depending on how much weight you need to lose, your diet is the first concern. You can't eat 10,000 calories a day and expect the weight to come off, even if you are exercising a lot. Which brings us to the next thing. Duh, Exercising... This is a must especially if you need to a lot of weight. Get at least 30 mins of some good hardcore exercising. Do some cardio, in the long run, it's good for the heart. However, I find the most hardest part of losing weight/keeping it off, in my diet. It's so hard to keep your fingers out of the cookie jar or those chocolate goodies. I've found a great addition to help any one out, it's a natural weight loss supplement called Proactol. Now don't get all crazy on me and say diet pills don't work. That is true, but not in this case. This one isn't meant to burn pounds while you sit on the couch. It's an appetite suppressant, along with being a fat binder. I saved money on the pills at theweightlossplace dot com along with getting some good info. It basically makes those fingers not go towards the cookie jar. For me it's the best pill I've tried and I've tried cupboards full. Now this doesn't mean you have to follow my foot steps but I've successfully lost roughly 70 pounds and keeping it off til this day. Well good luck and remember what I said, Dedicate."

Anyone know of a over the counter weight loss medication that ACTUALLY works? I know that exercise and a lowfat diet is the way to lose weight and keep it off. I have lost weight the "right" way before. Exercising and watching what I ate helped me to lose 60 lbs. about 3 years ago. BUT....since then I was prescribed the medication Prednisone, which made me gain 40 lbs. in 2 months. THEN...the month I stopped Prednisone, I found out I was pregnant with my third child. She is now 14 months old, and I still have all the baby fat, plus the 40 lbs. from the Prednisone!!! I plan to exercise and diet, but I feel like if I could find a medication that I can buy over the counter to give myself a inital boost, that would be great! Anyone know of anything that REALLY works??? PLZ let me know! Thanx!!!

Andy replied: "There aren't any that I know of. Sorry. The best thing you can do though is not buy the foods you don't want. If they aren't in your home, you can't eat them there..."

RobTheBest88 replied: "Nope, its a fad. Most of the time this stuff does work but thats because it has something Toxic or not good to your health in it. Then they discover this years later, and your stuck like 'wait, iv been taking this all along?" Just do like i did and work your ass off and lose it naturally, it works without having to pay money."

A quick comment specifically on PHYTOLACCA BERRY (Pokeweed is the common name). I've noticed that there have been increasing posts to this forum suggesting that this a good approach to weight loss. I have found no valid clinical trials that substantiate the claims made for this extract as a safe and effective weight loss treatment. I have found that on 7/18/98, the FDA stated that Pokeweed is "a well-characterized poisonous plant and that toxicity to humans and animals was associated with exposure to all parts of the pokeweed plant." scootypuff replied: "Weight is distributed evenly throughout the body so you cannot target where you want to gain weight same goes with weight loss"

ColoradoMama replied: "You can't gain weight in just one area. When you gain weight it is distributed fairly evenly through your entire body. Some people are prone to gain weight more in one or two areas, but overall, there is no way to just gain weight in one part of your body."
