does prozac cause weight loss or weight gain? Im getting put on prozac for anxiety. Im currently trying to lose weight, i heard prozac can cause weight gain but my doctor said it causes weight loss.. i dont know what to believe?

jonti replied: "Mmmmmm... Prozac.... It differs from person to person.... Nausea is the most common side effect (with 25% of people experiencing this). Other side effects may include:Weight loss, Dry mouth, Insomnia, Tremors, Diarrhoea, Skin rash (NB: any signs of allergic reaction should be reported to the doctor who prescribed the medication) and Confusion or dizziness. Prozac may also affect sexual performance and has not been proven to be safe in pregnancy. And like most psychiatric medications, it may impair driving performance or operation of machinery. If you are in the UK... I suggest to your doctor that you take Citalopram instead.... It's better for you in the long run and there are no such side effects"

Euro replied: "well it caused me weight gain. my doctor insisted it was me but i knew that my diet hadn't changed. many medications alter your metabolism"

gangadharan_nair replied: "Fluoxetine (Prozac) is used to treat depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder (bothersome thoughts that won't go away and the need to perform certain actions over and over), some eating disorders, and panic attacks (sudden, unexpected attacks of extreme fear and worry about these attacks). Fluoxetine (Sarafem) is used to relieve the symptoms of premenstrual dysphoric disorder, including mood swings, irritability, bloating, and breast tenderness. Fluoxetine is in a class of medications called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). It works by increasing the amount of serotonin, a natural substance in the brain that helps maintain mental balance. Side effects include weight loss. Please see the web pages for more details on Fluoxetine (generic name) Prozac (brand name)."

melissa replied: "Prozac can cause weight loss in some people and weight gain in others. It depends on how your body reacts to the medication. Also it depends on time because if you went off the prozac now and took it two years later, it could make you lose weight."

Prozac and weight loss? I've been on Prozac for about 2 months now... I take a pill in the morning and 150mg of Wellbutrin in the afternoon. I've lost about 10 pounds over the last couple of months, but I haven't been eating well either and was feeling somewhat depressed. I'm doing much better emotionally and eating much better also. I'm only 100 pounds now and I've been hearing that Prozac can cause weight loss; even my doctor said that was a possiblity. Has anyone had weight loss or weight gain with Prozac, or Wellbutrin even? I've been on the Wellbutrin (was on twice daily before the Prozac) for 3 years and I don't think it has any affect on my weight at all. Thanks.

letterstoheather replied: "everyone has different side-effects from their meds, hon. you can do a search on PROZAC SIDE EFFECTS for more information. If you feel you are losing too much weight, maybe you can start drinking something like Ensure or another high calorie drink once a day between meals? I hope things work out. take care"

sdg-FNP replied: "I prescribe both of these medications quite often. Typically, most people will actually GAIN weight on Prozac. It is a common class effect of SSRIs, and is often why we will choose it for people with eating disorders. On the other hand, Wellbutrin typically has the opposite effect, and can either be weight-neutral, or increase weight loss in most people. Depression can add to peoples' malnutrition, or lack of adequate intake. This is common, and most likely the reason you've lost this weight. If you're considered "underweight," then you might want to talk with your prescriber about a med change, or increasing the dose. All the best to you! :)"

Alex62 replied: "Weight loss is a potential side effect, although more people tend to gain weight. Wellbutrin is the one with a bigger weight loss side effect, but since you were on it before without a problem, it alone is not apt to be the culprit. If you are also still battling depression, perhaps talk to your do about trying something else. Either that, or really focus on your diet and put some more healthy caloric foods back in it."

kckmellons replied: "it could be the combo of the two meds that could be making you lose your appitite or it could be that you are feeling better and are more active that can make you drop weight. i know that wellbutrin can make you lose weight. i don't know about prozac. however i take klonopin and effexor and i have noticed that my appitite has deminished a little as well. it you are concerned talk to your dr and see what they have to say. they may not want you losing a lot of weight. and maybe the dr can help you with some diet ideas or maybe change your meds if you are still depressed as you said. hope that this helps"

sweets replied: "I know wellbutrin can definetly cause weight loss. But if u have been on it for 3 years prior to the prozac and did not experience weight loss, then it probably is the prozac. Everyone experiences different effects from antidepressants, i take celexa 20 mg and lost a lil bit of weight, as others gain.It just depends on the person. If weight loss becomes a major issue with you though, u may want to talk to ur doc about getting on a different one that dont cause u to lose weight, u said u weigh 100 pounds, that is pretty small, u prob dont want to lose anymore."

babymonsterval replied: "I think your eating habits may have something to do with it, I do not think anyone can give you a sure anwser when it sounds like it may be many things, to keep yourself healthy and safe, see your doc, good luck and keep fighting forward."

Aidens_Granny replied: "I gained 13 lbs when I was on Prozac. I only took it for 5 weeks. Don't recall any weight issues with Wellbutrin though. Both of these meds however, made me suicidal and extremely angry feeling. Everyone is different. While one med may be a godsend for some, it may be a major disaster for others."

how did you loss weight from prozac? i'm on it for depression , and i heard that people loss weight on it. why is that? i feel hungry all the time.

picopico replied: "I think people tend to gain weight on antidepressants."

tanya replied: "It affects different people different ways, you can just endure the hunger pains and don't eat, after a week it will feel normal of go back and see your Doc and change your meds, I changed 3 times before I found one my body liked"

intelligentshyunique replied: "hey prozac puts the weight on ya .You wont lose weight you will gain it.Cuz i have been on it for many years and i put on the weight."

WhiteNoise replied: "i didnt lose weight....i probably packed on pounds over the years due to the antidepressants. But it could just effect different people in different ways. For your case, I doubt it will make you lose weight though. sorry."

tideida replied: "I am on similar meds. I have an anxiety disorder. I gained a lot of weight in a very short time after the first symptoms appeared. The hunger is due to the anxiety. I finally learned to eat right. What is working for me right now is to eat one plate of food per meal, basically 3 meals a day: breakfast, lunch and dinner. For lunch and dinner I have fruit for dessert. When I get thirsty I drink lemonade that I make myself. I do not drink soft drinks. If I eat out I have the smallest servings. Before I would order a large pizza. Now I order a personal size pizza. I do not substitute sugar but I also don't pour more than than 3 teaspoons of sugar per beverage. If I drink milk, I drink low fat milk. Otherwise, I eat normally. Everything I have is fresh. It doesn't come out of a can or a box. Nothing is processed. If you find yourself hungry, have a couple of apples, peaches, pears, etc. I recommend not to eat dairy. I do eat chocolate, but I only eat small candy bars, and only one a day. If I am hungry in between meals I have a couple of any fruit i like. I love to have oranges with a few teaspoons of sugar. I can't get enough of them. Eventually, your hunger diminishes as you eat smaller portions. I hope I have helped you if even a little. Good luck."

♥Infatuated♥ replied: "If you don't like the way you are, suicide is always the answer."

Becsteroni Magl replied: "My husband takes this, he lost almost 50 lbs. But he cut out a lot of sugary things to lose the weight. But without the medication, he may not have changed his lifestyle."

Fluoxetine hcl (prozac) and hair loss? Ive heard you can have hair loss while on prozac. Has anyone experienced this? And is it total hair loss or just a few strands or general thinning of hair? And does it affect your eyebrows, eyelashes etc???

isleofskye replied: "I took prozac for about 12 months and experienced no hair loss"

ElectronProbabilityCloud replied: "I've not heard that one. It can make you sweat more than you used to though."

kezza replied: "i lost quiet a bit of hair while on fluoxetine but nothing noticeable to any one else only me while brushing or washing my hair"

angel_of_thought replied: "I was on Prozac for nearly a year and I didn't suffer any hair loss."

casinoreverend replied: "woooo...this is one side effect you dont hear of much. I work with the chronic mentally ill and most of them hardly notice any hair loss. Upon further inspection, part of the side effect profile lists alopecia--hair loss. Ive seen one client that has complained of hair falling out, and she described it as slow hair loss over time, not in clumps and not effecting brows or lashes. I would describe it as general thinning of the hair, if you have started prozac recently it might be worth trying a reasonable alternative (paxil, zoloft, etc) Prozac has been out for years, studied extensively, has little adverse effects on general population, cheap to make and has been proven to work!"

Sian replied: "I didn't even realize that this could be a side effect of fluoxetine. I know 4 or 5 people besides myself who have been on prozac and to my knowledge none of them have experienced this side effect. I took it for 5 years and didn't suffer any hair loss. It could be quite a rare side effect in which case I would try not to worry about it too much."

Angle replied: "I was on Fluoxetine(Prozac) for many years and never suffered any side affects"

[niki] replied: "i actually lost LESS hair while on prozac."

Alfirin06 replied: "I've been on it for several months now and I haven't noticed any at all. All I got was nausea and some weight loss in the beginning. All the side effects really depend on the individual, the ones they list in the leaflet are all the ones they've ever heard of but some people never get any."

what are the long term side effects of prozac... should I be worried? I have been diagnosed with OCD and panic disorder.....along with major depression.. I was wondering if there are any bad long term side effects to prozac.... I know I need to be on the medication long term to function normally....possibly for life... my main concern is will it make me very overweight? and will it cause hearing loss or bad tinnitus? and anything else you think I should know

slmw38 replied: "prozac doesn't usually cause weight gain it may cause some weight loss these are the side effects and they usually go away with time.Side effects may include: Abnormal dreams, abnormal ejaculation, abnormal vision, anxiety, diarrhea, diminished sex drive, dizziness, dry mouth, flu-like symptoms, flushing, gas, headache, impotence, insomnia, itching, loss of appetite, nausea, nervousness, rash, sex-drive changes, sinusitis, sleepiness, sore throat, sweating, tremors, upset stomach, vomiting, weakness, yawning I have had few if any side effects and i have taken it for over 14 years."

have you experienced wieght loss/gain with prozac ? i've been prescribed prozac and am in fear that i will gain weight. I've heard that prozac can make you lose weight, or it can make you gain weight. What has been your experience ?

Sam the Goddess replied: "I have been on Prozac 20mg a day for 4 years (have never missed a dose) and my weight hasn't changed."

georgiapeachntx replied: "Not sure about prozac, but on paxil I gained 65 lbs and it has taken a few years to get that off! I am on cellexa now and it didn't make me gain weight, but may have helped me lose a bit. With these types of drugs everyone is affected differently. I don't think there is anyway to know until you try it. I wish you the best of luck!"

Haley P replied: "I was on Prozac for 7 years and I lost about 3 pant sizes. It made me not hungry at all."

Hair loss and Prozac...? Experiencing some significant hair loss and Ive been told that Prozac could be the link...has anyone else heard this or experienced this for themselves. Also, after stopping usage, did your hair grow back...thanks...pretty anxious about this.

ilse72 replied: "Yes, it is documented that some people suffer temporary hair loss while taking prozac. Please note the key word here: temporary! So, yes, your hair will grow back when you discontinue the medication. May I make a suggestion in the meantime? This will allay your anxiety and hopefully make you feel more comfortable. If you are male, ask your doctor about a prescription for propecia (sorry, this medication is for men only). Recent studies have shown that men on prozac who are also given propecia end up with no further loss of hair and a regrowth of what was lost. So, you can have your prozac and your hair too! Good luck!"

Can missed doses of Prozac affect memory loss? I am on prozac for OCD but have missed 4 days in a row. I started back on again (after refilling my prescription) but for some reason have been quite confused today. Forgot my when my sons birthday was etc. I am only 32 so it can't be old age atleast I hope not lol. Anyway... I have forgot many words.. things like that today. Just feel a bit out of it and confused and have heard it can happen. Thanks

AnarchyAlchemy replied: "I used to get that too. Felt all light-headed and dizzy. Like all whats going on and stuff. But i asked my gp and she said it wasnt permenant. It was just a side effect. Gosh..im not even on prozac at the moment and im forgetting things..."

caffsans replied: "hopefully you only took one pill four days off will make you woozy when you start them up again relax until you are stable again=if this continues see a Dr"

Friendly Pharmacist replied: "Prozac stays in the body a very long time. I would not relate your confusion to missing those 4 days. It may have more to do with your OCD or anxiety. I would need to know more about your other medicines. Most common side effects of Prozac are anxiety, insomnia, anorexia, headache."

Cathlene replied: "Give yourself sometime to readjust. As you know the effects of prozac can take awhile to stabilize. But if it is becoming a huge hassle to you and interferes with daily activities, such as driving and work or family life. Talk to your doctor and they can tell you if you need to make any adjustments or at least give you the peace of mind in knowing what's going on."

life_long_victim replied: "It happens to me sometimes. It gets really bad when I'm on the phone telling everyone how I feel about all the things they've done to me when I was only a child."

From Prozac and Lamictal to 5HTP, Good Idea or not??? I am Bi-Polar. I have been on several different meds over the last couple of years. I am currently taking Prozac for depression and Lamictal to stabalize my mood. I already get headaches and these meds seem to be making it worse. I have been on Lamictal since Dec 2006 and Prozac since Oct of 2006. It seems as though my memory loss is getting worse as time goes on and wonder if it is the meds. I heard about 5HTP and am reading a book about it. I am seriously thinking of stopping my meds and trying it out. Of course my Dr.'s say there is not enough info on it. But I just want to feel normal again. I am tired of the suicidal thoughts and feeling anguished all the time and knowing that there is no reason for it. I have talked to my Dr about the suicidal thoughts and he says that it is normal and for now we will just "wait and see". This seems risky to me. I've heard sooo many good things about 5HTP.....I'd like a public opion. Thanks Some of the symptoms that I am experiencing have been lingering since I first started the meds. Other symptoms have been developing over the last couple of months. For instance the memory loss. I noticed that I was becoming a little abscent minded, but now I can forget things as I am trying to speak them. Or I'll think of something that needs to be done and immediately forget it and then get frustrated because it pops back in my mind hours later. As for therapy, I have not done any group therapy, but I have been seeing a therapist one on one for more than a year. She was actually the person who sent me to my Dr to get meds because my situation was getting worse. I have no intention of just stopping my meds cold turkey....I know it is a step by step process and I probably should have stated that, I just wanted to know if anyone has tried 5HTP after traditional meds and I am interested in others opions of it. By the way 5HTP is Short for 5 Hyroxytryptophan.

Dust in the Wind replied: "Short of going off your meds (and do not do that without doctor supervision, you must be weaned off) and trying an unproven and unapproved treatment I would advise you to get a second opinion. Wait and see should have been over months ago for you hun. There is NEW thought on bipolar disorder that may counter indicate the use of antidepressants. The fact that you are still experiencing this level of discomfort after 6 months of medication bothers me a lot. Consider, if you can, some therapy and group therapy to go along with your medication. Half the battle is knowing you are not alone. Dusty"

Prozac and Anorexia Nervosa? I am currently in recovery from Anorexia. My doctor keeps trying to convince me to try taking Fluoxetine (Prozac) - not for depression as I am not depressed, but to aid in the treatment of my eating disorder. Apparently, it might reduce some of the panic and anxiety I suffer when I eat. I'm currently undecided as to whether I should try it, and I would love some advice or to hear people's experiences of taking Prozac, especially those who have been prescribed it to treat anorexia. All the research I've done seems to imply that Prozac doesn't really help improve anorexia, especially if the patient is still underweight. Also there seem to be loads of side effects, one of which is anxiety and panic attacks as well as loss of appetite so I'm a little skeptical. I know they're only possible side effects, but still. Also, I don't really like the thought of being dependent on a drug which I don't even know is going to have any benefit to me - you don't start to see any benefit for between 4 - 8 weeks of taking them, so I'd be taking them for ages before I could even judge whether they were having any kind of positive effect. So anyway, it would be great if anyone who's ever taken Prozac, particularly in relation to an eating disorder could answer some of these questions for me - did it work in treating your eating disorder? How long did it take before you noticed its effects? Side effects? Do you think it benefitted you? Any advice/experiences at all would be awesome. Thank you! :]

SampleMyLOVE replied: "I haven't actually taken prozac myself, though have heard it can help when taking it for eating disorders. Though if you don't feel comfortable taking them, then don't. There are many down sides and people can often become dependant on them. the way i see it is that if you recover without medication, perhaps it will be easier to cope without medication. This is assuming your doing ok with recovery and aren't at a particularly high risk of dieing currently.Pills just stop the symptoms without the real problem. Whatever you descided to do good luck with your recovery!"
