Cathlene replied: "Give yourself sometime to readjust. As you know the effects of prozac can take awhile to stabilize. But if it is becoming a huge hassle to you and interferes with daily activities, such as driving and work or family life. Talk to your doctor and they can tell you if you need to make any adjustments or at least give you the peace of mind in knowing what's going on."

From Prozac and Lamictal to 5HTP, Good Idea or not??? I am Bi-Polar. I have been on several different meds over the last couple of years. I am currently taking Prozac for depression and Lamictal to stabalize my mood. I already get headaches and these meds seem to be making it worse. I have been on Lamictal since Dec 2006 and Prozac since Oct of 2006. It seems as though my memory loss is getting worse as time goes on and wonder if it is the meds. I heard about 5HTP and am reading a book about it. I am seriously thinking of stopping my meds and trying it out. Of course my Dr.'s say there is not enough info on it. But I just want to feel normal again. I am tired of the suicidal thoughts and feeling anguished all the time and knowing that there is no reason for it. I have talked to my Dr about the suicidal thoughts and he says that it is normal and for now we will just "wait and see". This seems risky to me. I've heard sooo many good things about 5HTP.....I'd like a public opion.
Thanks
Some of the symptoms that I am experiencing have been lingering since I first started the meds. Other symptoms have been developing over the last couple of months. For instance the memory loss. I noticed that I was becoming a little abscent minded, but now I can forget things as I am trying to speak them. Or I'll think of something that needs to be done and immediately forget it and then get frustrated because it pops back in my mind hours later. As for therapy, I have not done any group therapy, but I have been seeing a therapist one on one for more than a year. She was actually the person who sent me to my Dr to get meds because my situation was getting worse. I have no intention of just stopping my meds cold turkey....I know it is a step by step process and I probably should have stated that, I just wanted to know if anyone has tried 5HTP after traditional meds and I am interested in others opions of it.
By the way 5HTP is Short for
5 Hyroxytryptophan.
Dust in the Wind replied: "Short of going off your meds (and do not do that without doctor supervision, you must be weaned off) and trying an unproven and unapproved treatment I would advise you to get a second opinion.
Wait and see should have been over months ago for you hun. There is NEW thought on bipolar disorder that may counter indicate the use of antidepressants. The fact that you are still experiencing this level of discomfort after 6 months of medication bothers me a lot.
Consider, if you can, some therapy and group therapy to go along with your medication. Half the battle is knowing you are not alone.

Prozac and Anorexia Nervosa? I am currently in recovery from Anorexia. My doctor keeps trying to convince me to try taking Fluoxetine (Prozac) - not for depression as I am not depressed, but to aid in the treatment of my eating disorder. Apparently, it might reduce some of the panic and anxiety I suffer when I eat. I'm currently undecided as to whether I should try it, and I would love some advice or to hear people's experiences of taking Prozac, especially those who have been prescribed it to treat anorexia.
All the research I've done seems to imply that Prozac doesn't really help improve anorexia, especially if the patient is still underweight. Also there seem to be loads of side effects, one of which is anxiety and panic attacks as well as loss of appetite so I'm a little skeptical. I know they're only possible side effects, but still. Also, I don't really like the thought of being dependent on a drug which I don't even know is going to have any benefit to me - you don't start to see any benefit for between 4 - 8 weeks of taking them, so I'd be taking them for ages before I could even judge whether they were having any kind of positive effect.
So anyway, it would be great if anyone who's ever taken Prozac, particularly in relation to an eating disorder could answer some of these questions for me - did it work in treating your eating disorder? How long did it take before you noticed its effects? Side effects? Do you think it benefitted you? Any advice/experiences at all would be awesome. Thank you! :]
SampleMyLOVE replied: "I haven't actually taken prozac myself, though have heard it can help when taking it for eating disorders. Though if you don't feel comfortable taking them, then don't. There are many down sides and people can often become dependant on them. the way i see it is that if you recover without medication, perhaps it will be easier to cope without medication. This is assuming your doing ok with recovery and aren't at a particularly high risk of dieing currently.Pills just stop the symptoms without the real problem.
Whatever you descided to do good luck with your recovery!"
