What metabolic process is used in the production of penicillin? Im thinking maybe chemical reactions, DNA techniques or any type of chemistry.

Alone GuY replied: "submerged-culture process"

ananth replied: "Fungal Fermentation process"

What can I do to get the good bacteria back in my body after taking penicillin? I have just finished a penicillin treatment for an infection. As far as I understand penicillin kills of all bacteria in the whole body, the good ones too. Now I wonder if there is anything I can do (or eat !) that will help the good bacteria to get going again properly.

kaiceec replied: "Eat Yogurt"

sonnydays15 replied: "When people talk about killing 'good bacteria', they usually mean the bacteria that lives in your gut. You have to take penicillin or any other antibiotic for a while before it kills off a substantial portion of that bacteria. It mostly works by killing off the bacteria that are in your blood/lymphatics, which are much smaller in number. Give it some time (a few weeks) and they'll be back to normal."

Bob B replied: "I think there are things you can take that supposedly contain the good bacteria, which you could take, but it isn't really worth it. The "good" bacteria wil reform through natural replication before too long. As mentioned, it shouldn't kill off all the good ones in your digestive system, so yes, they will just get themselves back in order naturally."

Can anybody help me find some good web sites about penicillin? it's for a research paper i have to do.

Can Penicillin kill the "good" bacteria in your stomach? I'm on my second course of Penicillin (this time being a much stronger dose) to combat tonsillitis which doesn't want to go away. I've had it for 2 weeks and have had all the symptoms and have lost weight not only due to being unable to swallow, but also I think it is due to the Penicillin making my stomach feel a little iffy, so it's doing nothing for my appetite. Through common understanding, I know that Penicillin kills bacteria, so is it killing the "good" bacteria in my stomach also and making me feel a little "off". If so, what is the solution? I'm slowly getting bored of this illness!!

Sal*UK replied: "Yes, and in other areas too which is why women often get thrush after a course."

BigD replied: "Yes, it does. I heard an easy solution - eat yogurt! It is full of the "good" bacteria that regulates our digestion."

dcowley47 replied: "Yeah, penicillin is a broad spectrum antibiotic, so it means that it doesn't distinguish between types, so yes your digestive tract will suffer, but once the tonsillitis is over and the treatment is finished they will regenerate fast."

Ryan H replied: "All antibiotics have the potential to kill the "good" bacteria in your body, yes."

Sabrina A replied: "the only way for it to kill your good bacteria is if you are taking the medicine when it is unnecessary for you to take it. I remember that i had to have penicillin for my strep throat it tasted really bad."

physicist replied: "Yes it can kill the good bacteria as well. When you are done with the penicillin drink some acidophilis milk."

TJ replied: "It kills all bacteria, even the good, but if you arent on it long your good bacteria should bounce back. Antibiotics can cause stomach upset and diarrhea too. Did you or are you going to have your tonsils taken out? Usually you wont have the problems with tonsillitis if you have them removed but that's a personal choice that you and your doctor have to decide upon. Best Wishes!!"

tjoyc2002 replied: "There is a reason that doctors will only prescribe antibiotics for 10 days, and this is one of those reasons. The other is to reduce the risk of your body developing bacteria that is resistant to antibiotics called superbugs. For the clients I passed meds for that were required to be on long term antibiotics they had to take Acidophilus, an over the counter medication that promoted the growth of good bacteria in the stomach, in order to avoid the threat of developing (spelling?) Cediph (more bad bacteria then good). There are foods that you can eat that will naturally contain acidophilus and promote the growing of good bacteria such as Yogurt, sauerkraut, kombucha, kinchi, kefir, and many other fermented food products. You should also talk to your doctor about your concerns, because he may prescribe you a medication to help keep your stomach bacteria in balance. I hope this helps, and get well soon."

ckngbbbls replied: "eating yogurt can replace the good bacteria."

Mike replied: "Yes they can, people with prolonged penicillin treatment are sometimes give what they call a 'probiotic' which is a medication that contains sugar and supports the life of intestinal bacteria. (This is done for people with digestive disorders or people who develop dirrhea or constipation during penicillin therapy)"

Does penicillin have a good penetrating ability? Does it have a good penetrating ability in the membrane of the bacteria?

manjunath p replied: "Being an antibiotic, it has to, to kill the bacteria."

umesh the unconventional replied: "Pencillin is an antibiotic and it doesnot degrade cell wall of a bacteria but actually it inhibits its action. more over if you needs to know about its ability to fight against microbes it is a narrow spectrum antibiotics hence not very effective against fighting variety of pathogens at the same time amoxicillin a semi sythetic antibiotics is much more effective than pencillin(broad spectrum antibiotics)"

Pahd replied: "It depends on the bacteria and the type of penicillin. Penicillin type antibiotics (penicillin, methicillin, amoxicillin, Augmentin, etc.) and vancomycin work by preventing the bacterial from building it's cell wall, if that is what you mean."

whats a good nclex style question for penicillin? What's a good NCLEX style question for penicillin? I have to make one up for class and i am having trouble thinking of a good one....anyone?

daddyrx replied: "Penicillin is a) taken on an empty stomach b) effective against gram(+) bacteria c) only available forr oral administration d) a & b only e) all of the above Answer d"

In need of good scholarly sources for finding statistics regarding the # of people allergic to penicillin? data can be worldwide or U.S., but must be scholarly sources for a formal research paper

GovDocGirl replied: "From the Centers for Disease Control: "Of the adult U.S. population, 3%–10% have experienced an immunoglobulin E (IgE) mediated allergic response to penicillin such as urticaria, angioedema, or anaphylaxis (i.e., upper airway obstruction, bronchospasm, or hypotension)...An estimated 10% of persons who report a history of severe allergic reactions to penicillin remain allergic." While it is not a scholarly source (ie. not an academic journal), it is an authoritative source (being from a government agency)."

why is mould bad for you when penicillin is good for you? I know that obviously if you eat a piece of mould then ur prob gonna get sick, but when u r sick they give u penicillin. I dont get it because penicillin is pretty much mould. I mean hello MARIE CURIE!!! Could someone please explain this to but in plain english, not smart people talk!!! Thankss

♥Sarah♥ replied: "Mold is usually associated with negative thoughts. We all know that a lot of molds can cause serious health problems, but did you know that it could also help us? They are grown in some cheeses, but some cheeses do not have mold in them. Mold is what gives it that distinctive taste. For example, there are blue cheeses called Stilton, Gorgonzola, and Roquefort, which are made by using penicillium glaucum molds. They are aged and turned in to a color that looks so much like blue veins. It is also used in tofu, a Chinese tea called Puer, and Quorn, which is a European meat-alternative product suitable for vegetarians. These molds are good for you to eat, and the mold might look funny but it is harmless. These are just in foods, but there are many other things that have mold in it. Mold cannot only be found in cheese but it is in bread, and many other foods. There are many types of mold or fungi that thrive on vegetables and dead animals to reproduce and spread. Mold is also in many medicines, and it fights off bacteria. Mold are used in the creation of antibiotics, which are used throughout the world in medicines. It is the best drug to kill bacteria. Penicillin, for example, is made through the use of green mold. Other molds are formed into organic acids and into lactic acids, which are used for crop productions and to make products, such as beer."

KTDykes replied: "<> It isn't necessarily. Some moulds are bad, some can be good, others have no particular effect. <> It's not only "pretty much mould". It is a mould. <> She mainly researched radioactive substances, not moulds."

gribbling replied: "> "why is mould bad for you when penicillin is good for you?" Some molds are toxic, and other molds are edible, or beneficial in other ways: penicillium (where penicillin was isolated from) isn't really *edible* as such. Your question is a bit like asking "If fruit is edible, then why are some berries poisonous?" The answer is that that's just the way they (and we) have evolved. Some are poisonous to us (and can only be eaten by other animals which are resistant to the poison), while others aren't. > "if you eat a piece of mould then ur prob gonna get sick" Possibly. Moldy food probably has a lot of different kinds of fungi and bacteria growing on it, and many of these are going to be bad for you. But cheese is just moldy milk, beer is moldy hops & barley, and bread is moldy flour. Those are all edible. > "but when u r sick they give u penicillin. I dont get it because penicillin is pretty much mould." No. Penicillin is an antibiotic (a substance isolated from the Penecillium mold) - it isn't a mold itself any more than haemoglobin is a person. > "I mean hello MARIE CURIE!" Marie Curie worked on early research into radioactivity. Possibly you mean Alexander Fleming, the guy who discovered penicillin?"
