Celebrex Pain Relief Facts in Questions
Should I go to the ER for pain relief due to Fibromyalgia? I am newly diagnosed with Fibromyalgia after months of unreolsving pain and fatigue. My primary care physician prescribed Celebrex for pain 2 weeks ago. It has not helped at all. Currently my Primary care physician is closed. I called my rheumatologist who told me to begin taking the Cymbalta he gave me, and to expect relief in 3-6 weeks. I cannot sleep and am having trouble walking and dressing due to pain, I simply cannot wait 3-6 weeks. The rheumatologist told me he could do nothing else. I am not finding relief in Tylenol and cannot take other OTC pain meds due to a stomach condition. I am going out of my mind with pain, stress, distress, worry and lack of sleep. I called my pyschologist and left a message with her. I HAVE to work today till 9 pm. Would the ER be a good idea after work? I am just beside myself, crying at work, and a mess. I don't know what I want them to do, I feel like the doctors are relutant to treat my pain because so many people abuse pain meds. But I've never been prescribed anything aside from when I had surgery. Any suggestions will be greatfully accepted.

Kung Fu replied: "If you can afford it and are open to it Hypnosis and Acupuncture work wonders."

Donna <>< replied: "I have fibromyalgia also and have had for more years than I can count. Many doctors have the opinion still that it is controllable with stress relief or relaxation. I had a doctor that put me on Vicodins and Morphine (which I got addicted to). The last one took me off both and wouldn't give anything to me except Naproxen, which doesn't work. I have been to the ER for pain relief and gotten Vicodins, they work, but I used them very sparingly because they caused very bad constipation. So mostly I have to deal with the pain, which I've seen is worse right before it rains or the weather gets cold. One medication that they do have for it now is Lyrica, which I can't take. But when I did take it, at least the pain was less. Also I was put on Cymbalta, which helped some but then I got put on an anti-depressant called Zoloft and can't take them together. There is a website that might give you suggestions to try. "

justmeinthisworld replied: "I doubt the Er will help--they won't even treat me for unrelated conditions sinc ei have fibro-but if you have time and money-try it-a small percentage of time--teh doc actually cares- but be prepared to flee if they become abusive. as soon as possible--ask about lyrica--it works faster and is in teh ani seizure class----there have been some reports of trmadol helping--it is an opiate--but not a 'controlled substance' you need some new docs--i hav ben trying to fin a competant 1 for 8 years Celebrex is CONTRAINDICATED for fms-it is an NSAID and tehre is no inflmaation-so it generally does not help at all--- and if you just have cymbalta-that may or may not work-and teh doc says tehre is nothing else--he is an idiot"

I have reflux problem. I have also pain in my shoulder and the whole arm. Am on Omeprazole. Will Celebrex hurt I have been taking taking pain killers for my cervical spondulosis and other related pain for the past few years. I stopped taking celebrex for the past one year since my reflux problem in my stomach. I started taking celebrex since yesterday as I cannot bear the pain in my joints and muscles in the whole of my right hand. Will retaking celebrex hurt my stomach in any way. Since I am taking Omeprazole for my stomach now, will it protact my stomach from pain killers. Is there any other safer relief for the killing pain in the whole of my right hand, as I feeling crippled. Dosage - Omeprazole 20mg -One in the moring and one in the evering. Celebrex 200mg - same as above Both medications dispensed at government hopitle.

legal&sane replied: "The omeprazole is probably strong enough to protect you, if not you can swith to aciphex, if you still have the same problem(reflux). Definately take the celebrex or swith to a different pain med than the celebrex and see if that causes the same amountt of reflux."

precious73@verizon.net replied: "I take celebrex it really does a body good. But you must understand I have been instructed to take celebrex threw my physician remember never take any medication with out the permission of a licensed physician and yes it really does help me.YOU really need to talk to a doctor about this matter seriously good luck hope you find relief."

doc_jhholliday replied: "You should always talk to your doctor(s) about your drug regimen. Celebrex is a strong NSAID (non steroidial anti-inflammatory) which is great for my knees. How much celebrex are you taking? You may need a stronger proton pump inhibitor than prilosec (opeprazole) like Nexium (esomeprazole), though it is much more expensive and not OTC. What about steroids? What about muscle relaxants? Amitriptyline (Elavil) helps some people with chronic pain though it's action is unkown and an off label use. What about physical therapy/soft cervical collar? Heat/ultrasound? It's impossible to really have specific advice with no details on drug dosage, kidney function, overall health, current list of medications or supplements. Best to talk to your doctor."

Any mothers experience sever back pain after giving birth? I had my son about a month ago via c-section and from about a week post partum I started experiencing severe back pain... I went to my primary care doctor who gave me mortin & tylenol the first time....then I went back because it wasn't helping, and gave me celebrex which is not doding anything either... I'm jsut curious to know if anyone else experienced this and whatr they were given for pain relief?

alexia's mommy replied: "Yes it is from the epidural that they give you in your spine!!!!! I have the same problem alexia's mommy"

Tigerbabe replied: "I went to my Dr. and because I was breastfeeding I didn't want to take meds. Instead he refered me to see a physical therapist where I was shown different techniques to alleviate back pain through stretching exercises, after 15 mintues of stretching I was given a 30 minute full body massage! I went 4 times a week for 2 months. I also found out I had pinched a nerve in my L4/L5 vertibrae. I have 1 extra vertibrae in my coccyx (tailbone)"

Crystaline replied: "Same here with the epidural. It'll go away with time but in the meantime, put some ice on it for 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off to ease the swelling. Then the next day, try heat to get the blood flowing to make the bruising heal faster. Hope you feel better and congrats!"

your dad=) replied: "the bigger question is who cares?"

farlove7 replied: "My son is 3 months old now and i am having very bad back pain as well. I also went to the dr. and she was encourageing me to stop nursing.....I thought that was crazy....but anyways....she gave me some excersies to try to strangen my back and gave me naproxon. It is doning nothing for the pain. Have done ice and heat and still its killing me. I had a buldged disk in my back as well before i was prego...having the baby kinda saved me but now the pain is in a diffrent place and i am also at a lose for what to do.....so if you find something let me know....I would love for this to end too"

OTC pain pills I can safely take while taking my Celebrex? HELP!? I'm in pain and the Celebrex isn't working. I know not to take any other NSAIDs while using Celebrex but what about Tylenol? Can I take that? I called my doctor's office and the nurse told me to keep taking the Celebrex to give it time to work. How much time? I've been in pain and without much more than a few hours sleep in 2 weeks. I need relief and soon.

Sparkles replied: "Since Tylenol is not an NSAID and there should be no risk to take since it is safe to take by people who have problems with ulcers. The reason you cannot take any another NSAIDs and Celebrex is because you would be increasing your chances of developing gastric bleeding. Next time ask to speak to the doctor. The so called nurse was no help at all."

no1familiar replied: "Awww...I am sorry! There is nothing worse than chronic pain. (have had it for years) Call a pharmacist...preferably where you pick up your medication. They always are aware of the possible interactions and can answer your question with accuracy. If you can't take anything with it, I recommend laying down, turning the lights off (no visual stimuli) and turning on soothing music. Though you will still hurt, this will help you relax a little until your medicine kicks in. When in pain, the tension you are in from the pain creates even worse pain...so this is why I recommend it. Good luck."

LJAY2000 replied: "Great nurse. Pretty much just blew you off. Tylenol is safe to take with NSAD's. Since Celebex is not working for you, talk to your doctor, (not the nurse) about trying something else."

Billie77 replied: "Tylenol would be safe to take with the other medication. I don't know what your pain is, but here are some suggestions that might help. Take a hot bath with 2c. of dissolved Epsom salts. Soak for 30 minutes. The Epsom salts will help eliminate the lactic acid that forms on the muscles from over exertion. Massage an analgesic cream into the sore muscles. I find the best cream for pain is “Blue Emu,” You can read more about this cream at Dehydration can cause severe pain in the muscles. I recommend you drink purified water mixed with mineral water 50/50. This will replace the minerals that are exiting your body continuously. I suggest that adults and children drink 40 ounces of water per 100 pounds of body weight every day. 500mg of calcium and magnesium taken twice daily can help with pain."

CHRONIC NECK PAIN! I have had this since I was 20. Neck is stiff, painful, and caused constant headaches.? It has gotten worse as I have gotten older. Chiropractic used to help a lot, but not anymore. I am desperate for pain relief. I am not into taking drugs.(besides-I tried Celebrex-and it did not do a thing!) Thinking about chinese medicine, or injections(nerve blockers). Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

bevijea replied: "I have neck pain too and have had headaches all my life. I started Acupunture (sp) and it has helped my headaches a lot. I seem to have them less and when I do get them I can get them to go away. You have nothing to lose using chinese medicine. Hope this helps"

memyselfandi replied: "maybe physical therapy to stretch the muscles ... and massages are always a thought ... and i would think about acupuncture"

Relief for Chronic Sciatica? Since Sept. 1, I have been in pain...really AWFUL pain in my left hip, down the side of my thigh and into my calf. It doesn't hurt very much when I am sitting, but trying to walk for any more than 30 feet is almost unbearable. My husband is already an invalid from diabetes. I am his 24/7 caregiver. We both don't have any family to help us if we are both sick at the same time. I would more than appreciate any information from someone who is medically knowledgeable about sciatica or who has had success or failure with any procedures concerning it. I can't take opiates for pain relief. Has anybody tried steroidal injections, muscle therapy or even surgery for this condition? I would ask that anyone answering truly have knowledge about this. Our future depends on what I can do to help myself. I am already taking Celebrex for the inflammation, but it doesn't help very much.

Steve replied: "Hi, first let me say that I'm sorry to hear that your husbands health is not good and that you are experiencing back pain and sciatica. Also, I'm not a doctor but someone who has lived with back pain and sciatica since May 2005. In regards to your sciatica, it is difficult to talk about your particular situation without more specifics such as MRI or CT scan findings, but I'll make a few comments based on my personal experience. I've dealt with back pain and sciatica since May 19, 2005 and can tell you it is very complicated to treat. I've had four surgeries, more injections than I can remember, physical therapy, and now have an Intrathecal pain pump. From my perspective, based on how the doc's worked with me, the steroidal injections are not a long term solution but provide temporary relief. Depending upon what is causing your pain, that is why the MRI or CT scan is important, if the injections do provide relief I would be working on strengthening core muscles. Hopefully by strengthening your core you can take some of the strain and load off your back and that will lessen the pain. I can't stress this enough, based on the research I've done there is no silver bullet with back pain and sciatica. What works great for one person might not work at all for another. In the end it's you that has to make the choice as to how your back pain and sciatica is treated. However, as long as a nerve that controls bladder and bowel is not compromised, I'd try every conservative treatment available before the surgery option. The pain can actually get worse after surgical treatment, as it did with me. If you would like to talk let me know and I'll get you my phone number outside of this open forum. I do hope things turn out well for you and your husband."

Acupuncture, would it work? There's a possibility I have endomitriosis and I'm constantly in pain on the right side of my lower abdomen... I've never had acupuncture but I would like to try it because I seriously cannot find any pain relief in Tylenol 3s, perkocet, celebrex, basically any prescription drugs,... I'm a little apprehensive about it and I' m wondering where the pressure/needle points will be applied for this pain. Any help is great help! Thanks

judy f replied: "It is worth a try - there wouldn't be so many of them if sometimes it didn't work. If you have health insurance, I would seriously consider surgery to alleviate your pain. There are a lot of good treatments for that including laser removal of growths."

BED replied: "YES! you should totally try acupuncture and look into herbal therapy for pain relief."

nandrcordon replied: "YES IF ADMINISTERED BY THE CORRECT PERSON ACCUORESSURE NIGHT HELPL THE POINT TO FOCUS ON WOULD BE SPLEEN 6, IF YOU HSVE ACCESS TO A CHART. YOU WILL FIND A SENSITIVE SPOT, SENSITIVE TO PRESSURE ABOUT YOUR PALM WIDTH ABOVE THE INSIDE ANKLE BONE. FIND THIS SENSITIVE POINT BY APPLYING DEEP PRESURE IN THAT AREA. MASSAGE THAT SENSITIVE AREA WITH YOUR FINGER OR BETTER ES STILLWITH A SMALL VIBORATOR,, YOU NIGHT ALSO TRY PLACING A REFRIGERATOR MAGNER ON THAT SPOT FOR A FEW WHILE OR WEAR IT THERE FOR A WHILE. IF WJILE MASSAGING OR MAGNETIZING THE POINT STOP OR REMOVE AND IN A FEW SECONDS OR NINUTES IT WILL IMPROVE. MAT RE[PEAT SEQUENCE. CHEERS"

Curious George, C.Ac replied: "Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine can help relieve pain related to endomitriosis, ovarian cysts, and other gynecological issues. Acupuncture treatments will often consist of points used in the local area of pain combined with points on the arms and legs. Most of the needles will not even be noticed after they are inserted. If one is sharp, or stings, for more than a 10 count let the acupuncturist know so that they can adjust the needle. Be aware that after the first treatment you may only notice relief for the first 24 to 36 hours. This is part of the process of the therapy, and the pain relief will increase with subsequent treatments."

Pain in hips, both sides. Nothing seems to help. Anyone else feel this way? I am 47 years old. The past month or so, my hips have been hurting, and nothing seems to bring relief. I've tried Celebrex, Aleve, Naproxin, and Excederine. My next step is going to the doctor. I had a hysterectomy end of June. I don't know if there is any connection, maybe there is. Has anyone had pain in their hips as I described, and actually found out what it could be? It's really starting to affect my quality of life. All I feel like doing is laying down and resting. Come to think of it....I had some pain in my tail bone back before my hips started to hurt, it was very sore....so there definately has to be a connection and something going on!

Hannah replied: "yes... when i broke my tail bone!! You dont have to fall really hard to break you.. you can turn wrong and it will break.. and you can do nothing but wait it out... dont try to take a s h i t .. it will HURT!!!"

bethanysmama replied: "Could it be bursitis? I have it in both my shoulders and only 600 mg of ibuprofen will relieve it. Repetitive movements over a period of time (from a few months, to years and years) can cause the bursae in your body (which are scattered around at various joints) to become inflamed and lack the lubricating fluid that normally causes our joints to work painlessly, causing the bursae to rub together and cause a great deal of pain. I developed bursitis after being on a cleaning crew and doing various jobs such as vacuuming, sweeping, and mopping every night for about eight months...plus before that I had worked in a daycare where I lifted babies and young children every day. So if you have done any repetitive movements over the years, it could possibly cause that. The hips and shoulders are famous places for bursitis to develop. Ask your doctor. Hope you feel better soon! Try that ibuprofen and see if it helps. Good luck."

ginwill1 replied: "Go to your doctor and get some xrays. It could be lots of things...arthritis, loss of cartalidge, any number of other problems. I have had chronic pain in my hips for years the last few years it has gotten really bad and now I have to use a wheelchair or if I am having a good day a walker. Am scheduled for hip replacement in Jan. it is supposed to relieve the pain. I wish I had done it several years ago when the Doc first suggested it as now I have limited mobility and poor quality of life. When you day lay down to rest put a pillow between your knees and don't sleep flat on your back as this can throw the hips out of allignment. Also until you can get to the doc, try to avoid stairs, ladders etc. as these things put extra stress on the joints. Also squatting and bending can increase pain just as sitting or standing for too long can. Also try to not let your legs get too cold as this can also cause more pain. If you find out you do have arthritis the best thing I have found for some relief is Etodolac your doctor will need to prescribe it. I hope some of this helps. Good Luck."

Pain medicine? I want to know how many Over the counter pain killers, such as Ibuprofen 200, I can take without being harmfull. I know there is a recomended doe, but It's the same for a 150 pound female at 40 years old as it is with a 260 pound male at 25 yrs old. That cant be right. I am in pain all the time, and I cant get relief. The doctor gave me Celebrex and it doesnt work! I can take 2 Ibuprofen 600 and feel close to nothing. I have to take 2 1/2 5/500 Viccodine to get relief. This SUCKs! can anyone tell me what my options are. Doctors wont give me what I need and I dont want to hurt myself. :(

LENORE P replied: "stick with what your drs gives you or you may end up in the hosptial and you body will get use to the pills and then when you really need them it wont help."

Angelina replied: "You need to continue working with your doctors. The doses on over the counter prescription aren't there for you to look at and decide that you're going to go against the dosages. Taking more medication than you're supposed to take can in turn hurt your liver, your kidneys, your spleen - then you're going to find yourself in more pain than what you are now. How long have you been taking the celebrex? It can take awhile before you'll begin to feel better when taking it. As for the ibuprofen and vicodin not working you've probably taken pain medication for so long that your body has built up a tolerance to it. Maybe talk to your doctor about using a steroid such as methylprednisolone or cortisone for your pain? (Depending on what kind of pain it is) - or try things such as ice or hot water bottles/heating pads instead of always turning straight to the pain medication!"

blackfangz replied: "You have a problem common to many! They, the doctors, are suck ass afraid to order adequate pain control because the government that loves you may yank their license. Too many people in your situation have found a good street connection for pain killer and self medicate. If you can't find a doctor that will work with you, you may have to do what it takes to resolve the issue. Whatever you consider that to be.... Ibuprofen WILL NOT compete with vicodin 5/500. Naproxin Sodium - Aleve - has a little more kick, but can tear your stomach up and cause bleeding. Sadly, effective pain control is only available through prescription or illegally."

Arabella replied: "Let the pain medication build in your system. Often times, when I take pain medication for something, the first dosage does next to nothing for my pain. But I find that if I take the recommended dosage every 3-6 hours, the medication begins working, and my pain diminishes. Although, in my situation, I was only taking Ibuprofen for a sore ankle. Your problems sound more serious than just a sore ankle! If my advice doesn't work, then I can't think of anything else you could do but continuing to visit the doctor if issues persist. If that's the case, tell your doctor the same things you wrote here. All the medication you'd had to take, that you don't want to resort to Vicodin, etc. Good luck with everything."

I am taking Vicodin (Hydrocodone) for knee pain, but it's not working!?!? I've been on Vicodin (Hydrocodone) for 3 days now (5-500MG, every 4 Hours), and I feel NOTHING. I still have pain. I'm not tired. I'm not dizzy. It's like I'm not taking anything at all. Does it generally take time to work (to build up in your system)? Or is it supposed to be an instant relief? I am also on Celebrex (200mg, Once A Day). The ER Dr. gave me the Vicodin Prescription. The Ortho. Dr. gave me the Celebrex (for torn cartiledges). The pain isn't unbearable, or I would have called the Ortho. Dr. by now, and asked for something different. I will just tough it out. I just wasn't sure if Vicodin was something that had to build up in your system. Thanks all!

Roger replied: "percocet!!!!"

HannaKat replied: "no, it is not supposed to take that long for a Vicodin to kick in. It generally starts to work in 30-45min. For some reason you body must have a tolerance for it. I am suprised that you waited 3 days to get information. You need to call you doctor back and let him know what is going on and he can prescribe you something else that should help. There is no reason that you need to be in pain."

Romano replied: "Vicodin should start woriking pretty much right away. I would let the doctor now may be the strenght is not right for you (are you taking 5/500?) you can try vicodin 7.5/500 , 10/500 etc. or just ask your doctor about a narcotic Percocet that is a bit stronger (also available in different strength)"

Leneki replied: "It should work right away. You should have called the dr. back the same day he gave them to you and they did'nt work. I was going to suggest you call your dr. and let him know your still in pain, but damn you do it now he'll swear your just trying to get more drugs. Maybe you can try.....He might give you something stronger."

gillianprowe replied: "I assume you have already seen a Doctor and he has diagnosed you with Arthritis as you are on Celebrax. Therefore you need to contact your Doc and tell him nothing is working and he will change your drugs. GL PS you just had a visit to ER and have MRI on Monday, so you will have to tough it out."
