claritin(loratadine) vs. childrens zyrtec. Which is better? my 4 yr. old little boy is suffering from allergies, i've tried claritin, and seems to work for a short period of time then doesnt continue, then he went to rhinocoart nasal spray and i dont like that either, wonder about zyrtec....anyone ...ideas for him.??? please?

justcurious replied: "All of these medications are basically the same thing. Some just seem to work differently than others. The ENT Dr. I worked for did prefer Zyrtec for children. I would say ask for Zyrtec. One of these meds has got to help your baby. Good Luck"

lisa m replied: "Discuss this with your Allergist? Rhinocort has steroids in it and although there is a minimal amount absorbed systemically it is still in there. Also using nasal sprays on regular basis has a rebound effect.Your child is too young to be toying with different meds please get the advice of an Allergist.Zyrtec has worked very well in my family however I would not give it to a child that young.good luck"

www. Drop Your Allergies .com replied: "Get OOF the Medication Merry " No GO" Round. No Medicine is good for him ... Med's mask Symptoms while his Allergy Disease only Gets worse. Suggest visiting your Prime Dr. .... have IgE Allergy Blood Testing and KID Friendly ImmunoTherapy Allergy DROPs."

Anyone used nasonex or zyrtec for a child.? My son is 4 and went to the ENT for ear tube removal and while there he had some congestion and she gave me a prescription for nasonex and some trial bottles of childrens zyrtec because she said he has allergies (but never tested him) . Is this stuff safe if your not sure of allergies or just cold.

Tim & Lori-Ann replied: "Hi. Our son is 4 and he has been on Zyrtec for about 3 years now. So I would say it is safe. For us it hasnt been very effective but I would give it a try. We havent had nasonex but use Flonase as well. Our son also is on his second set of tubes because of the allergies. UGGGG."

smileychild replied: "I work in a pediatrician's office - generally we see lots of children on Zyrtec, but from personal experience as well as what the parents say, I would advise you to give it to him at night. Zyrtec works very well for lots of kids, but it makes nearly everyone drowsy, so if you give it to him before he goes to bed, he won't feel sleepy during the day. As for nasonex, as far as i know it's safe and is given to kids younger than your son. Just keep in mind that it is a steroid (it's not as though it's the kind an athlete would be injecting, however no one loves steroids in any form, they're great at reducing inflammation but used with caution). If you follow the directions from your ENT, it's totally safe. Good luck!!"

Shane replied: "i used both before and recommend it for my patience but nasonex takes a while to work i recommend astropro nasel spray it works better and faster i mostly recommend sinus rince its not a medicine and it works better then medicine"

Have you ever given your child the allergy medicine called Zyrtec? There is a childrens formula that I was interested in but wanted to get some feedback from people who have used it. Any thoughts or comments? Thanks and peace-

darpunzel replied: "I have never tried the children's formula but Zyrtec was the ONLY allergy medicine I could take with no side effects."

Can I give my 16 month old Tylenol Plus Cough and Sore Throat? The bottle says 2 yrs+. I know Childrens Zyrtec says that too and my Dr. said it is safe at a lower dosage...

dritia replied: "call and ask the dr to be safe"

sweetpinkgirl86 replied: "bring the tylenol to the doctors too and ask the doctor."

Tinker B replied: "i give my twins this actually they are taking now! they are 13months old i give them 4ml. but thats because of weight thats what they go by im sure you know that but i was just saying! but yea just call the doctor to see how much to give based on her weight its fine!!!"

ANGIE O replied: "no i wouldn't just stick with regular tylenol. The cough medication is not going to work."

A Y replied: "Doctors and pharmacists are no longer allowed to recommend any cough medicine for children under 2. There was this whole thing that recently surfaced regarding a lack of studies indicating the effectiveness of cough medicine on children of this age. (This is why all the infant meds have been pulled from the shelves.) In addition, there were too many babies ending up in the hospital because of dosage errors. So, they are not allowed to give you a dosage for anything other than tylenol / motrin, ,etc. This being said, when my 18 month old had a horrible, nasty cold that was keeping her up all night because she couldn't breathe, I did call my ped and told them that I was going to give her some regardless, and would ____ be the correct dosage? (I can't remember what is was, exactly.) The nurse said, "If I were you, I would go ahead and give that to her." So, legally, they can't tell you. But, as long as it is given in the correct dosage, I don't think it will hurt her/him... of course, I am not a medical professional. :) Good luck!"

Heather replied: "No, not only are babies ending up in the hospital, but 6 died from it. It was taken of the shelves for a reason. They can have very bad reactions, and you shouldn't medicate unless it's absolutely needed, ie antibiotics. Try honey for the cough, and a humidifier for the stuffy nose, with tylenol for the sore throat! .I hope you little one feels better soon!"
