Doxycycline In Dogs Information in Answers
what are the side effects of doxycycline for dogs? My shih tzu has lymes disease and the vet gave her doxycycline 100mg one tab daily till gone, this was started on June 22. She hasn't moved her bowels in two to three days. Is this medicine constipating her? I am going to call the vet in the morning but I also wanted to add that I cook all her food, because we lost a pet from the pet food recall. I cook her ground meat, sometimes add rice not always, cause it can bind. I add carrots,or peas, mash potatoes instead of rice. Sometimes she gets roast beef. I process all this in a food processor, and make it the consistency of canned dog food. She has been eating fine. Adopted her two months ago.

cameochis replied: "It may be possible although I don't think the two are related. Give her some canned dog food or some raw hamburger to get her bowels moving again. You could also add a bit of olive oil or even cooking oil to her food. If the problem persists, please talk to your vet. The Doxycycline is really needed to cure the Lyme disease so keep her on it for as long as the vet says. Hope she gets well again quickly."

Bambi replied: "That's a really strong medication, and it would make sense that it's causing this. But I'd call the vet and ask what to do, because 3 days is a long time. Even if it's a side effect of the medication, you have to get her to go soon. Your vet should be able to tell you on the phone if you need to bring her in for an examination or might prescribe something else since they just saw your dog recently."

ananda8star replied: "I work at a Vet Hospital with a Kennel and I have cleaned up after SEVERAL dogs on doxycycline (an antibiotic) who have had NO problem going! I know because I clean up after them. That doesn't mean it's not the case with your dog. Regardless, not having a bowel movement for 3 days is not good and you should talk to your vet. A good laxative for dogs is some canned pumpkin, they like it and it should loosen those bowels up. Give that a try but still call your vet in the morning. Good luck!"

Dara P replied: "I looked at your question earlier before you posted that you COOK all her food. I didn't know if DOXYCYCLINE had a side effect. I was going to ask my doc in the morning. Here's a lil about what I KNOW! My dog is on Doxy because she has tick fever. She has had NO side effects and is doing MUCH better. I am a Vet Tech and have seen many dogs on Doxy and they have had not side effects either. As for cooking her food. I don't disagree with that but you need to make sure she is getting the right amount of Protein and Fiber. From what you said you were feeding her sounds like she is gettin too much protein and not enough fiber... which what most people take (fiber capsules is one form... i acutally drink it) if they are constipated. Fiber will make you go. Since you have only had her for two months... the lack of enough fiber in her diet has probably constipated her. I would suggest increasing her fiber intake... find some food that are high in fiber and mix it with the food you are already cooking for her. I don't think Doxycycline is the culprit tho! I hope I helped."

Question about deer ticks, doxycycline, and dogs? Less than one month ago, my dog tested positive for ehrlicial, and although she was on FrontLine treatment for ticks at the time, and testing positive meant she was exposed to it, Doxycycline was administered as a precaution. She hasn't had her FrontLine since and is currently on her last few pills of Doxycycline. Today, I found two blood engorged deer ticks on her. I obviously removed them and am getting her shaved tomorrow. I also plan on taking her to the vet to get her tested, but does anyone if, because she was currently taking the antibiodic, Doxycycline, she is not at risk for an infection carried by the ticks? I'd appreciate any responses.

Rachel C replied: "Well, there's not really a precise answer to this. Antibiotics are only effective for treating certain types of organisms and bacteria, so it depends on what might have been transmitted to them from the tick as to whether or not the doxycycline would be protective. Doxycycline is one of the antibiotics used for tick-borne disease, such as Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. It is effective for quite a few atypical organisms, which are the type of organisms that ticks are likely to be carrying. So, it will most likely have been helpful, but there is really no way to be certain."

glenp replied: "I would keep her on doxycycline. There are not many physicians little lone vets that treat lyme. One theory is to give doxycycline for two years I will include a site here, click on community and then on lyme----You have to completely get rid of it right in the beginning or the dog could really be in trouble, so I would keep her on the doxycycline at least until you investigate it more. Good luck with your dog. Are you keeping her in the house? Don't let her stay outside by herself."

alynnemgb replied: "The best answer I can give is maybe. Different antibiotics work on different bacteria. Doxycycline is often used to treat Lyme disease and since you found deer ticks, this may or may not be a concern, depending on where you live. The best advice I can give is to talk to your vet."

My dog is on Doxycycline 100 mg for 21 days as a precaution because of multiple tick bites? The vet says he needs tested for lymes 2 weeks after finishing the antibiotic. It doesn't make sense to me because the antibiotic he is on should kill any lyme disease. I think the blood test is senseless. Any professional opinions on this?

dartass224 replied: "Well as said, its a precaution. If you are waiting on a blood test either results aren't in or you havn't taken it yet because lymes dosnt always show up right away. Antibiotics prevent infection but it probably wont get it out of his system if he test positive."

Sleep Is For The Weak replied: "Its always best to be safe than sorry and lose your pet down the line. You can also check out supplements which keep your pets immune system super strong in case something in the future happens."

Cat replied: "Antibiotics are not always effective, especially with lyme disease. Better safe than sorry."

Tramadol/doxycycline meds for Dogs? Our "little Girl" Was rushed to ER Vet after labor day. Very sick many tests, we were told that she has a tick infection (?) The vet put her on Clavamox, Doxycycline and tramadol. Very scary side effects with these meds. Has anyone had problems with Tramadol? Or with these combinations of meds ? Thank You. Concerned "Mom" The Vet believes she has Rocky Mountain Spotted. I have been in close contact with the our Vet several times. But, It is Saturday no ones answering and our dog is not tolerant of the Tramadol. I have researched all side effects, and know that they are less severe than the disease that she has. Just was wondering if any ones Dog had a nasty side effect to these meds. Thanks everyone. I appreciate the response. I am watching her closely. I will give her half a dose 2x daily. instead of a full one. And call vet on Monday.

Nancy H replied: "Call your vet and have him answer your questions. If the side effects are that great, your dog may have an allergies to the meds."

KoAussie replied: "Clavamox and Doxycycline are typical antibiotics and other than a possible upset stomach, you should no side effects. Tramadol is a synthetic narcotic used to control pain. It is also used in humans. Your dog may be sleepy as a result, but no real significant side effects should occur. Tick infections include erlichia, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and Lymes disease to name just a few and all can be deadly so the small side effects your pet may experience on the treatment are worth saving her life. _________ What sort of side effects is she experiencing? I currently have a dog on Tramadol for pain management and have researched the drug extensively. If she is having negative effects to that pain medication, go ahead and stop using it until you can talk to your vet. Do not discontinue the antibiotics."

Jessie replied: "Do you know which tick-borne disease she has? All drugs have side-effects. You should speak to your vet about what side effects to watch for and how to manage them. The drugs would not have been prescribed unless they were safer for her than the tick borne infection progressing. She's on two antibiotics and an opioid pain killer. Antibiotics generally have side effects of digestive upsets. Tramodol can cause constipation and sometimes drowsiness, But do speak to your vet if you are concerned. He's your best resource on medications. ETA: If you can't reach your vet about the Tramodol, call an emergency vet. Some of the opiod painkillers can't be stopped abruptly, but rather need to be tapered. I'm not sure if Tramodol is one of them or not, but an emergency vet would know if you have to taper it or can just stop it cold. Sometimes it is dose dependent."

I wonder If my dog take a medicine is Doxycycline 100Mg and would cause him nausea or sick for a whiles? This is SERIOUS question to asking here. Of course, I went the VETS and everything went good - He has lymes disease. the nurse gave me the medicine of Doxycycline 100Mg. I wonder any you have any experience bef4? My dog's doctor said would help my dog

Baby replied: "ive taken doxycycline and its a broad range antibiotic"

demo replied: "yes doxycycline causes nausea and vomiting. you should read the side effects in the medicines or go back to the vet."

rasberry vodka replied: "So sorry about your dog. This antibiotic is very hard on the stomach of humans and animals. Nausea definitely At least humans can understand but the poor dog just suffers. I have taken this medicine. uk!!! But Doxycycline is a very good but very powerful antibiotic. Have you started giving it to him? I know you can't answer me so since you did not say what symptoms he has that makes you think he is nauseated I can only guess. Is he trying to throw up? I have a dog but I don't think I would know if he was nauseated. I am sure he wouldn't want to eat much.. or just mope around not acting like his normal self . Well, here is my suggestion. Call your vet and ask them if it would be OK to give your dog Dramamine( the seasickness medicine) It is an OTC med. Any drug store. You would give it every 6hrs or whatever the vet recommends, Then again, maybe the vet has something else for him to take. Medicine is usually given according to the animal's weight. My dentist told me about Dramamine when I could not tolerate Vicodin he gave me for pain....Nausea big time!!! It worked. I hope doggie will be OK. Gotta get some tick and flea drops for him. Poor guy!"

Can I give my 95lbs dog one buffered aspirin while she is also taking doxycycline? She is obviously in pain (from possible arthritis). She is also on day three of doxycycline. Does anyone know if these two medications can be taken together? I am hoping to get that for her tomorrow when the vet's office is open. Can I give her an aspirin for the pain just for today?

cat_skratch replied: "Your best bet is to get a prescription for rimadyl which is an NSAID meant for dogs. Your vet would be more than glad to call it in for you, as long as your dog has already been seen. Aspirin can potentially be dangerous for dogs and cats. Rimadyl and doxy also have no drug interactions."

shebajack replied: "No don't give aspirin under any circumstances. Dogs are not humans and need medications designed for dogs. Here is a site to help with what to give a dog for main management. "

ladyindica replied: "One 200 milligram ibuprophen is what my vet recommended when I couldn't afford the high price of the doggie nsaid Rimadyl. Just never give Tylenol...it is poison to dogs."

Bethnyc replied: "Dogs can take baby aspirin which is also an NSAID with the same risks and side effects that most NSAID's have. You should call a pharmacist in your area and ask if one baby aspirin can be given with doxycycline. You cannot take two kinds of NSAID"s together and if this particular antibiotic is related in anyway then it could be trouble for your dog. For future reference, a much better choice for pain is Tramadol which is an opiate and has very few side effects (most common constipation but rarely occurs). NSAID's inclucing Rimadyl have a lot of potentially dangerous side effects.(this is true of the NSAID's human's use as well). You should however wait until tomorrow to speak with your vet as mentioned below. None of us who have responded are vets."

♫♪ Nekkid Bootie ♪♫ replied: "never medicate your dog without consulting your vet first. Asprin is also a blood thinner.. so there are potential side effects from that. Give her a warm place to lay and help her feel comfortable until you can talk to the vet.. some gentle massage may help her feel better too. If its arthritis.. heat helps.. warm some towels and put them over her joints."

Dances With Woofs! replied: "Yes,you can give aspirin with doxycycline, but you should not give them at the same time.Space the doses so that they are four hours apart. You would give 5-10 mg. per lb every 12 hours, and Buffered aspirin is best. A 95 lb. dog can safely take two aspirin. Give it with food and tell your vet that you gave it to her. May I ask why she is taking the doxycycline? If it is for Lyme disease, then that is likely the cause of the joint pain. "

How does lyme disease affect dogs? I am usually great about checking my dog for ticks, but one day I missed one, noticed it about 3 days later.. I took him to the vet and she says his blood showed semi high "levels" What did she mean? What can I expect.. how will this affect him? She gave me Doxycycline and I've been giving him these tabs once a day for about 3 weeks now. Will he be okay?

lizzy replied: "Lethargy, joint pain, swollen joints, intermittent fever. Doxy is the treatment of choice. Most dogs do very well with treatment, some become chronic cases but it's rare. If you read up on human lymes disease, its pretty much the same for dogs."

sadiejane replied: "he may need a second course of antibiotics. Those ticks are tiny so don't beat yourself up over it. be sure to start giving him yogurt to help the good bacteria survive I would also talk to your vet about starting him on the glucosimine chondroiten msm supplement"
