Find Effects Of Coumadin in Questions
What are the long term effects of coumadin? How many years can a person be on it safely? Coumadin, generic form: warfarin, is a medicine to thin blood following heart valve replacement.

gangadharan nair replied: "Traditionally, a mechanical valve has been used in patients < 65 and in older patients with a long life expectancy, because bioprosthetic valves deteriorate over 10 to 12 yr. Patients with a mechanical valve require lifelong anticoagulation to an INR of 2.5 to 3.5 (to prevent thromboembolism) and antibiotics before some medical or dental procedures (to prevent endocarditis). The leaflets of biological valves are flexible and durable and do not require the patient to take blood thinners for the rest of their life. Warfarin is used to prevent blood clots from forming or growing larger in your blood and blood vessels. It is prescribed for people with certain types of irregular heartbeat, people with prosthetic (replacement or mechanical) heart valves, and people who have suffered a heart attack. Warfarin is also used to treat or prevent venous thrombosis (swelling and blood clot in a vein) and pulmonary embolism (a blood clot in the lung). Warfarin is in a class of medications called anticoagulants ('blood thinners'). It works by decreasing the clotting ability of the blood."

ckm1956 replied: "A person can be on warfarin for many years if their blood levels are properly monitored."

Rhianna Returns replied: "As long as is needed, you must have your INR checked regularly though."

Dr Frank replied: "The only real ongoing side effect of warfarin is a risk of prolonged bleeding, the drug can be used indefinitely."

Are there any negative effects of taking Coumadin while tanning in a bed? I don't want to hear about skin cancer and all that. I am asking about the effects of tanning in a bed while taking a blood thinner like coumadin.

holey moley replied: "Ask a pharmacist."

emarsh331 replied: "I don't think there's a real reason why you can't tan while taking coumadin. Tanning doesn't affect your clotting ability or bleeding in anyway, nor does coumadin make you photosensitive (more sensitive to the sun). So, no, taking coumadin does not make tanning any more unhealthy for you..."

What are the effects of too much Coumadin and Aspirin ? My brother has A-Fib and is being administered too much of these meds in addition to Klonopin and Cardizem. (He is in a facility (NJ) and we feel he is being overdosed--he is not well..if anyone also able to help legally? medically? Please let me know. I have already tried several media avenues. I suppose I forgot to mention a few of the effects he is having: - lost 20 lbs in two weeks -extremely tired/fatigued, physically weak - loss of appetite

Experience with Coumadin and its side effects!? I am on coumadin for a DVT in my left leg. Its been a month and a half that I have been on the meds. I have some pains and concerns sometimes and Im not sure if they are something to worry about or not. It is nothing intolerable.. just annoying. When I was diagnosed with the blood clot I was so shocked that I had one bc the pain wasnt HORRIBLE. Im just wondering if anyone has experienced side effects from coumadin and to what extent. I know what they are. I have read all about it, but I want to hear from a real person who has experienced problems with it or what it feels like to have a clot in your lungs and what not. I will ask my doctor as well.... I know how everyone on here always says just to ask the doctor!

David S replied: "Yes, it has many side effects and yes it is also used as rat poison. However, if you need coumadin, it's because you already went past the point of no return for good health. Do not stop taking it or you will most likely suffer a stroke. If you are feeling effects from it, unfortunately you'll probably have to deal with them for the rest of your life, but let your doctor know anyway because they are the only ones that can help you do anything about it."

KittyKat replied: "My grandmother took it but it was for hardening of the arteries, not for a BC. She had to go to the doctor every 6 weeks for blood tests to make sure everything was within certain limits and she bruised really, really easy so she wore long sleeves alot because of the bruises on her arms from cleaning around the house. One time she accidentally hit her leg with a stool and it took quite a while to get that to heal so be careful of hurting yourself. If you do, don't put it off like she did, get to the doctor right away so they can treat you immediately and help it heal quicker. Good luck"

alanrjamrjar replied: "coumadin can cause weakness when first started and also nausea, but unless told by your doctor don't stop taking it. that will only make things worse. I was on it for nearly two years, for about the first six months i felt like death wasn't far off but after that I felt fine. you also need to avoid things with vitamin k."

Coumadin & side effects? Does anyone know of the side effects of coumadin? I'm on it for DVT blood clots that were found resulting from using the NuvaRIng about three weeks ago? I'm wanting to know more about the medicine and my condition. Can anyone help me?

N replied: "The main side effect of coumadin is bleeding. This is why you need to have your blood tested to make sure the level is correct so you are not prone to excess bleeding. Here is more info on the drug, next time ask your doctor about your prescriptions, he/she is the best person to ask:"

More side effects of coumadin.......? I am looking for the after effects after taking coumadin....anyone with info please anser, will be very helpful.

ems.junkie replied: "The main side-effects are hemorrhage and other bleeding issues. In some cases, skin necrosis can occur, and then there are the typical ones (nausea, headache, diarrhea, jaundice, edema, rash, ambdominal pain, etc) You can look it up on which is a great site for finding indications, contraindications, and side-effects of meds."

what can people taking coumadin eat without any side effects? My father just started taking the medication....he received a list of "What he can't eat" what I need is a list of "What he can eat"....so that it will easier for me to cook for him...

Mr. Peachy® replied: "Glad you asked. I researched this recently for a friend. Go to and under "tools" select "nutrient search tool". Then fill in the highest in (potassium, for example) and lowest in "vitamin K", and then select the food category you're interested in... probably vegetables since they're the ones that you're mainly concerned with. The search will net you all the foods that are low in vitamin K (the clotting agent), and high in the desired nutrients. You can select several parameters. Here's a tip... the less you cook his vegetables, the better they will be for him. I've posted links to a lot of valuable information on my diabetes info page linked under my profile. Here's one you might find interesting: Always remember this, you can learn more about this stuff than so called experts in just a matter of weeks. All you have to do is keep your mind open to this simple fact... Our bodies are optimized for the foods we evolved down through the ages consuming. Or, if you're a creationist, our bodies were optimized for the foods that Mother Nature provides for us."

marie a replied: "The only thing my husband was told to avoid is a lot of green leafy vegetables other wise he wasn't limited as all. We eat meat, fruit, pasta, rice, potatoes and fish. But now his coagulation lady say the doctors would rather their patients to eat green leafy vegetables that are good for you and have his coumadin adjusted to his readings."

What effect does Coumadin have on the Kidneys? ? Coumadin is a blood thinner, and I was wondering what are the long term effects of using the drug Coumadin? If you could give me some websites that would be much appreciated. ;) Thanks, a.

Jeanette :) replied: "oh dude that crap helps you so much! well if you need it it does, like my step dad is alive cause that pill. well.. also, thats the reason why his kidneys only work 30% =( so i say, if u need it, take it! if you don't, please dont!"

elleny47 replied: "Coumadin is metabolized by the liver, not the kidneys. The only long term risk of taking coumadin that I have heard of is the risk of bleeding. You have to be very careful not to injure yourself while taking this. Drinking alcohol and taking anti inflammatory over the counter meds (advil, aspirin, etc) can increase this risk."

how many different milligrams of coumadin are they? My mom is taking coumadin and is bruising horribly and bleeding fom her bowels & kidneys. The doctors are having ah hard time getting the right dosage for her. She has an irregular heartbeat. She is now taking 5 miligrams every other day. Does coumadin come in lower dosages than 5mg. Is this a side effect of coumadin?

Chicken in Black replied: "Warfarin (coumadin) also comes in 1mg & 3mg as well as higher doses. Bruising and bleeding are both possible side effects, and are common. Infections, diet, stress and other medications all impact the way that coumadin effects the body and getting the dosages right can be very long time. That is why testing is normally done so often to make sure it isn't too high or low. Good luck and I hope your mom will be ok."

scooby doo replied: "There are many different milligrams. 0.5mg, 1mg, 2mg, 2.5mg, 3mg, 4mg, 5mg, 6mg, 7.5mg, 10mg also sometimes doctors write for like 12mg or maybe 14mg or a combination of the strengths above. hope this helps."

gir replied: "I take coumadin and there are dosages from 1 up to 10, even in betweens (2.5 3.5 4.5). She needs to be seen at ER if she is bruising and bleeding. They should put her on heprin which is like coumadin, however it is givin thru an IV, not a pill. Your INR range is not something to play with. If her INR is too high, they will lower her dose. If its too low, they will give her Lovonex injections in her stomache. Please have her call her doctor or go to the ER."
