How concerned about seizures should I be on Wellbutrin if no history of them? I started taking 150mg of Wellbutrin 5 days ago and will increase to 300mg in a week and a half. I am concerned about that side effect, how common is it at the above dose? Please don't cut and past from web, I can do that, medical professionals or personal experience please.

Medic_13 replied: "I've seen a lot of patients who take this drug and have never seen a Wellbutrin induced seizure. I know it is listed as one of the side effects, but it would seem to me to be very rare. Typically with this class of drugs, seizure side effects occur most commonly with a sudden stopage of use. I wouldn't worry about it too much, unless you start having a lot of adverse side effects. Then talk to your MD about changing to something else."

How does Wellbutrin effect Eating Disorders? It is said at Drugs.com that you should not take Wellbutrin if you have had a history with Bulimia or Anorexia. Why is this??

Is there any evidence that wellbutrin can lead to seizures event after stopping its use? I have no history of seizures but I don't want to take something that will make me more pre-disposed to them.

xo379 replied: "It is a possibility, but a very small one, and it's not a risk that will stay with you after you stop taking Wellbutrin--the chances of having a seizure are the highest right when you start taking it (and if you suddenly stop taking it, which you should never do anyway) and will basically disappear once you completely stop taking it. But those chances are not very high in the first place. It's more likely to cause seizures if you have: a seizure disorder, a history of brain injury, a brain tumor or nervous system tumor, bulimia or anorexia, and/or severe liver problems (like cirrhosis.) However, keep in mind that hundreds of medications and diseases increase the risk for seizures. Wellbutrin is one of the safer antidepressants, and one of the antidepressants with the least side effects."

I have a question about about anti-depression medicine. Which medicine is the best for me? I am severly depressed. I have been on Lexapro, Celexa, Cymbalta, Zoloft, Effexor, and probably a few I have left out. I am very obese and need to lose weight. I also smoke, and need to quit, duh. All the other medicines don't seem to help my depression and KILL my sex life. I have been doing some research and I am considering requesting Wellbutrin. I have no history of seizure disorders or any known allergies. I just wanted to get some opinions. I have started going to a therapist, that is starting to help me. I am fortunate enough to be getting married next year and I would love to be able to get my depression under some sort of control. I really need your help. Thanks so much.

hunter621 replied: "Wellbutrin works great for a lot of people. Many people try it, but don't like how they feel and quit it on the first or second day. Give it a few weeks before quitting it. (typical complaints are: my heart felt like it was beating fast, I had too much energy, etc.) One thing to be aware of if you are coffee drinker is that the enzyme in the kidneys that metabolizes caffeine, is monopolized by the Wellbutrin. So if you drink 3 cups of coffee first thing in the morning, that evening you still feel that buzz. Majority of M.D.s and pharmacists don't share that information. Most folks cut down on their caffeine intake and do great. Also, wellbutrin is also sold as Zyban which does help a lot of people quit smoking. Wellbutrin can be abused/used recreationally? What does that mean exactly? I get my Wellbutrin XL from the manufacturer for free but they have stopped sending it to me and I can't figure out why. I'm researching on how to get this matter taken care of and I came across this site that mentions that Wellbutrin XL can be taken "Recreationally" and I am wondering what, exactly, that means? Why would you want to? What would it possibly do? I just want my panic attacks to stop so I am desperate to get my medication... But why on earth would someone try to abuse an antidepressant? Wellbutrin's Cons: Despite Glaxo's assertions, the SR form does cause minor seizure events in people with no prior history at the higher dosages. Wellbutrin (bupropion hydrochloride) can be used recreationally, so it can be abused. It has to be avoided by anyone with an eating disorder, between the lower seizure threshold and potential of abuse as an eating disorder enabler. Sorry... Clarification: I'm not trying to buy them online, just research why Bridges to Access aid program never sent out my refill. Turns out that Glaxo Smith Kline sold the rights to Wellbutrin XL to another company so their aid organization doesn't cover it anymore... I'm trying to get switched to Wellbutrin SR (Which is still covered) & in my research for the differences between the two forms of the same medication I found a site saying that it can be abused. It sounds like your going to have to go to a doctor if you want to continue your medications. Its dangerous to get medications on line because their is no one to monitor the side affects, to be sure your taking the right dosage, to be sure that the medicine is not dangerous for you or that you are not taking other medicines that may interact with the the drug. I don't know what all recreational ways you can use welbutrin but I'm sure there are many. Just as you can abuse adderal and other drugs. When I was in highschool I smoked some pot that I didnt know had been laced with wellbutrin and ended up hallucinating severely for several hours and thought I was going to die. Any drugs that can potentially be abused are especially inappropriate to offer online. And as for the eating disorder its likely that the welbutrin inhibits appetite in some way. I know that it controls the portion of your brain that has to do with the "Reward Center" (Which is why it is used for smoking cessation) so it might turn off hunger receptors as well? I have never heard of someone using a Multiple Re-uptake Inhibitor for recreational use, especially since it takes approximately 8 days of use to get a blood concentration high enough to actually alter your brain chemistry."

Is anti anxiety medication right for me and which is the best? I am in my late twenties and for years I have dealt with anxiety and some anger. I now have a small child and find myself getting frustrated with her. I tried Wellbutrin in the past and the side effects were horrible. My family has a history of anxiety issues and I would like to know others opinions on this issue. I'm going to the doctor next week, and want to find out info before the appt. Thanks!

Donna M replied: "It sounds as if you may have depression or seratonin issues as well as anxiety. That may be why your doctor gave you Welbutrin. But not all medications work for all people. If you didn't tolerate it well, then try something else. You may need a class of drugs called seratonin reuptake inhibitors. If your family has these issues, too, it could be inherited. Talk to your psychiatrist... not just your family doctor. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who studied a few more years to learn about psychological issues. A psychiatrist can evaluate your emotional issues and prescribe the proper medication. Your family doctor probably does not have this level of skill. And congratulations for taking an active role in dealing with this. Too many people are afraid to admit they have a problem."

I take an SSRI eg Prozac, Zoloft etc. From my experience the best medication is the one that suits you the best.I tried a couple, before settling on Zoloft. Sometimes the side affects settle down after a few weeks. Keep regular Doctors appointments to discuss how you feel. Maybe some Counselling may help. I found Yoga and Pilates to be helpful. Let your family know how you feel and ask for help if you need it. Good Luck"

replies2news replied: "I believe you also have some kind of other issue besides anxiety.. it's just that 'anxiety' manifests itself more visibly TO YOU than say depression (ask your family if you appear depressed - and/or check out info online to see if you fit into the self tests). Paxil (a SSRI) has been 'approved' to treat panic/anxiety attacks and is also an anti-depressant. Since I have never received 'relief' from any of these meds, I do take Xanax and regularly, but I have not increased my dosage in 10 years... so... The moral of the story is.. find what works best for you AND while it's true that things like Xanax or Valium CAN BE addicting there is a difference between addiction and physical dependence. A word of warning, IF you start taking a Xanax type drug, and decide to stop, DO SO SLOWLY, and wean yourself off.. people's bodies do not tend to care for immediate cessation of these type of drugs and it can cause siezures if not done properly. Mixolydian replied: "The best drugs for anxiety are benzodiazapines, ativan, xanax etc. These are commonly prescribed for long term use in high doses if your anxiety problem is worse than the inevitable addiction. Your doctor would make that call."

Kim replied: "I have anxiety disorder and am currently on Celexa (an SSRI)--I was on Lexapro but it was getting too expensive, and Celexa is nearly the same but has a generic available. It's done wonders for me. Besides the medication, do some things for yourself. Young mothers tend to neglect themselves in favor of their children, which does no one any favors. Take some time off if you have someone who can watch your daughter. Someone with your anger and anxiety problems really needs some time away, if that can be managed. It will make you feel better and help you be a better mother."

Wellbutrin AND Lexapro? I had been taking 10mg of Lexapro for about three weeks (no prior history with anti-depressants); and upon a follow-up w/my doctor, was prescribes 150mg of Wellbutrin for in the morning. The day before yesterday I missed my dose of Lexapro, but took my first Wellbutrin yesterday at about 11:00 a.m. followed by the Lexapro late last night, before bed. This morning I woke up wanting to vomit. (Really bad nausea to the point where I would have vomited had I not truly MADE myself NOT do it). Has anyone had this experience with these two medications? Could it have been me missing a dose of Lexapro, instead of the combination of the two? Any suggestions? Thanks!

Luna replied: "It could be missing a dose, but Wellbutrin made me really jittery until I got used to it. It worked great for me after a couple of weeks (and the side effects went away) but I did get sick the first few days. If you can sit it out, continue for a week or two and see how you feel. You should tell your doctor you are nauseous to the point of almost vomiting. If you are like me, the sick feeling will go away soon, but if it doesn't your doctor will probably take you off it."

Snickers B replied: "Your fine, Wellbutrin makes people really nauseated. when I first went on it, I didn't eat anything for 5 days because I felt so sick. The symptoms will go away in a week or two."

Paul A replied: "I take Wellbutrin SR (150 mg) in the morning, and Lexapro (10 mg) in the evening, for depression and anxiety. I've been taking that for over a year and a half, and it's working very well for me. From what you've written it sounds like you're just starting on the Wellbutrin. If you are just starting it, try it again - it could just be a "break in" side effect. Antidepressants can have "weird" side effects happen the first couple weeks you take them. When I first started taking them, I had really bizarre and vivid dreams for a while - which went away after a while. Of course, if this continues, you should contact your doctor. You might also be able to split the Wellbutrin pills in half for a week or two, to give your system a chance to become used to them, then go back to the full dose."

Adding wellbutrin to celexa, adderall, and xanax.? Want to preface this by saying I have no liver problems, seizure history, or manic episodes(1). Have read that the effects from all 3 drugs I am on currently, have some advisory warnings related to seizure threshold when combined with wellbutrin(XL 150mg once per day) to be exact. Psychiatrist gave it to me to for 2 reasons 1: quit smoking as the adderall turned me into the marlboro man, so to speak. 2: Adderall seems to have decreased my sex drive(only blatant variable). I can't give up Adderall, because I am doing amazing on it ADHD wise and depression wise, as I am now jacked in, absorbing whatever I have to, instead of getting off track every 30 seconds. My Psychiatrist is obviously aware of everything I am on because she prescribed them to me. My question is: To what certainty can I ascertain that I won't develop seizures? I could do a percentile increase with each variable and see exactly where I would be. So my underlying question would be: Would you take the chance considering the pros and cons? Pros: All pro's are dependent on "if" the drug actually works for me. 1 quit smoking. 2: More intense-frequent orgasms. 3. Trying to get off Benzodiazepines(Xanax) for anxiety and panic attacks. 4. An overall, constant sense of well-being. Cons: Again, how I react to the drug 1. Seizures. 2. Serotonin Syndrome when in combination with an SSRI(Celexa). 3. Death from allergic reaction( not really a concern as I am not allergic to anything I have came across). 4. Any other complications, of which I am not aware. I am not worried about any other side effect (excluding allergic reaction/death) which comes with the territory[hell, nuts can kill somebody,("that's what she said")], because I am accustomed to suicidal thoughts, anxiety, etc. (1) Previously was diagnosed as bipolar, which was incorrect,because of comorbid personality defects associated with untreated ADHD, thus leading to my depression and anxiety, which stemmed from where I was at in my life conflicted with the image I have of myself. I went to the psychiatric hospital after a sudden cessation of my opiate abuse, hydrocodone, to be exact, which can lead to a plethora of acute mood swings, anger, etc. Have learned my lesson with opiates, to be sure.

? replied: "One common problem that happens is this. I have been there and done that. You have to figure out what it is first that is destroying your sex drive. If your on medication like birth control or anti-depressants that is something to think about and do research on. Other then that it could just be stress, maybe the kids, really anything that makes your life stressful can do this and lower the libido.
