What is a natural alternative to prednisone? If there is one, when will small results first be seen? Thanks!

college_gal_83 replied: "Unfortunately, I've searched for a natural altnerative to it (for years, really) and have yet to find one. I usually try to take capsules of golden seal until I can get into a doctor or go the E.R....but I have yet to find natural corticosteroids. :("

rickyoutfield replied: "Yes, Standard Process has nutritional supplments. The best way is to find a nutritionist who can help you find out exactly what your body needs. Usually if it is an allergic reaction there will be an immune response problem. You can check their website. They also can give you the name of someone near you who distributes the supplements."

Is there a natural alternative to Prednisone? Hi. I am asthmatic and occasionally will take Prednisone as a last resort after the Albuterol doesn't work. (My dr is aware of this.) The asthma is considered moderate but persistent. Even though over the past seven months I've only taken it 2-3 times a month and anywhere from 10-60 mg (usually 20-40 mg) depending on the asthma epsiode, I am aware of its side effects. Is there anything natural that relaxes the airways and chest muscles like Prednisone? Please no horror stories about the drug or asthma. Thanks for replying, John

Mad Roy replied: "Prescription For Natural Cures (Balch & Stengler) lists: Essential Fatty Acids; Magnesium 250 mg 2-4 times daily; Vitamin C 1000 mg 2-4 times daily; Astragalus 500-1000 mg daily; in addition to many other useful pieces of advice and information."

Are there any alternatives(natural remedies) for infections? I was in the hospital last month with Pneumonia. I was admitted and had to stay there for a week. The doctors had me on high doses of Levaquin and Predisone and I was on oxygen. I also have asthma so they were giving me Ventilin treatments as well. The same day I got discharged I ended up going back that same night and getting admitted again because of shortness of breath. They couldn't understand why. They said maybe stress at home. I have 3 children. But they didn't give me anything to calm my nerves. I think I was having anxiety/panic attacks. Since I've been home I'm still taking Predisone I'm down to two 5mg pills a day along with Symbicort (inhaled powder for asthma) twice daily. I recently went back to the hospital again for shortness of breath and the doctor in the ER prescribed Avelox. After reading the printed out information sheet I'm not sure if I should take it. It states in capital letters ADDITIONAL MONITORING OF YOUR DOSE OR CONDITION if taking Prednisone. Is it safe?

fire_inur_eyes replied: "Anxiety is too much carbon dioxide and an imbalance of oxygen--the breathing reflex gets off kilter---breathe in from a brown paper bag--should help in a few minutes---in and out slowly...gather it up to cover the nose and mouth. Don't you have an inhaler device prescribed?? Take what the doctor ordered---and have the kids be quiet and give you some help here---where is dad?? You should be able to quietly relax and get back to health easily--not just working all around like normal---is your house dusty--pet hair?? get a filter to wear if necessary---try that for a few days. how about mold in the house--the basement--waterleaks cause mold spores--VERY BAD WAY TO LIVE. Get a professional to bleach the areas--while you go out for a few days.Feel better and good luck"

pkingman1274 replied: "usually when there is a statement like that the mediaction can be used safely if adverse effects are closely watched, you should talk to your pharmacist and ask him what to watch out for, remember that you should be involved in your healthcare because you can give the most accurrate insight into the problem you could be experiencing. Working with knowledgeable healthcare professionals can benefit you the most and will ultiamtely acheive the best health outcomes. Also remember that pharmacist are drug experts, not doctors, pharmacist don't get detailed by drug companies and have usually 4 years of training in pharmacology when doctors only have one year of pharmacology. Look for primary literature on the web, try Prednisone + Avelox in Drugs.com drug interactions checker."

Amy replied: "Hi, Just wanted to let you know that Prednisone can cause the anxiety/panic attacks. I'm surprised they didn't tell you that this could be the source of your problems. Avelox is an antibiotic. You can actually make a quick call to any drug store - Eckerd's is really good about this - and ask for the pharmacist. He/she will answer any questions you have about drug interactions. Good luck. I hope you feel better very soon."

omri.lechat replied: "I have asthma...have since i was 3...and I couldn't imagine giving up on medicine for "natural remedies". I like breathing. It feels good (most of the time). There is one thing you can do, though, and that's to see a good chiropractor. I never believed people who told me it would help with something like asthma, but it really did. It changed my posture and changed my overall health. I was a strong kid, but my shoulders used to hunch forward. That put pressure on my chest cavity and made breathing harder. Once the spine started getting adjusted I honestly started having far fewer attacks and flairs. It doesn't mean I'd ever suggest you walk away from your doctor and start taking your medicines. if you have pneumonia you have to get it treated. People can and do die from untreated asthma and it's needless. But when you start feeling a little better you could investigate the chiros in your area and if there's one who treats holistically. I found that kind of doc near Detroit and swear by him. But he's just a part of the equation and is part of my health team...not the only part."

What are some alternative natural ways to drain my sinuses? My nostrils are clear, but on my right side, there is a lot of pressure.. Already took Zpack, Allegra-D, and Prednisone....nothing is working yet. LOL, I've tried blowing my nose, and actually massaging my nose as well.

Skye replied: "massage it or blow ur nose"

im a cutie with a fabulous booty replied: "snort warm water into your nose and that will help ive try it before...or u can use vaporab"

Earl Francis V replied: "We have a similar case. I had an x-ray of my nose. There, the doctor concluded that polyps had grown. Ask the doctor if polyps had grown in your nose. I recommend you use Nasal Spray."

teeger671 replied: "boils some catnip....it is a lot like the meds in vicks. Mullein leaf. Chamomile."

tajmina replied: "A neti pot is the Indian way to clear your problem. Purified water with sea salt is used to irrigate the sinuses. It takes some practice, but you will get the hang if you keep trying. Try to find one at your better suplements/vitamin/health food store."

guzzlegob replied: "Acupunture, aromatherapy oils. That's the ones that work for me."

xxandra replied: "Take a hot shower; as hot as you can stand. Drink hot tea with echinacea, eucalyptus, peppermint, or menthol. Celestial Seasonings Complete Care contains all four. While you're drinking, breathe in the scents. Try acupressure, too. Place your thumb and second finger on either side of the bridge of your nose, just about right with your eye level. There's a spot that feels just a bit "bonier" there. Apply firm pressure for about thirty seconds; you should be able to feel the pressure being relieved. Hope this helps!"

Curious replied: "You may want to use a sinus nasal rinse. They are available from the pharmacy, and you use a saline rinse to wash out all the nasties from your sinuses. It's especially good if you have allergies, gets out all the nasty allergens, but can also clear out mucus."
