Question for all those parents of babies with reflux? I have a 7 month baby who has been diagnosed with reflux and takes 10 mg omeprazole a day and infant gaviscon. She has been on this medication for about 6 weeks now. I have found that when we went on holiday she was never sick and when we arrived in UK she started being sick again. Over these past 2 days where it has been hot in UK she has stopped being sick. For those of you whose babies suffer reflux, do you think there is no/less sick in the warmer weather, or is the medictaion starting to work. Her reflux was diagnosed as being moderate to severe.

Jude's Mummy replied: "My son has been diagnosed with severe reflux. He is on a few medications and they dont do anything to help it, he also has prescription milk (you may want to ask about that also, its been an improvement). I think that it could be that when its hot they have less layers on and looser clothes and when its cold we put more layers on etc...creating slightly more pressure on the stomach rather than just letting it be free so to speak lol My son is better at night or first thing in the morning and I think it is because he wears a babygrow then so nothing is pressing on his tummy like a waistband."

InDigo replied: "I live in phoenix az, my son was born in the beginning of summer and suffered more during the heat. My doc did say it was tied to the warmer weather."

Daniela (Poppy's Mama) replied: "I'm in the UK too and my Daughter had severe GERD for almost 8 months, hers was allergy induced and we tried every medicine you can imagine. Sadly, weather didn't make a blind bit of difference to her symptoms but then she wasn't ever a puker - hers was silent. I would say it might well be that 6 weeks in, the meds are working or that because you were on holiday, everyone was a little less tense and stressed and that helped her to feel more relaxed and in turn, controlled her reflux."

acid indigestion and heartburn natural remedies? i have been suffering with constant heartburn and acid indigestion since i had my first baby my gp gave me omeprazole but i stopped taking them as i found out i was pregnant again, i have been using tums and gaviscon but they give little relief. does anyone know of any natural remedies i can try?

Xfce Fanboy! replied: "Barley grass is supposed to absorb excess stomach acid, you could look up some information about that."

mar0711 replied: "you need a base chemical to neutralize the stomach acid so try milk, any kind should be find, fruits like apples and grapes, and products with a vinegar base are some examples of products. I don't know what all you can eat while pregnant but you should probably go see a dr. if it persists"

What could grey vomit in an infant be? dud omeprazole? My 5 month old has severe gastro oesophageal reflux. I gave him his bottle this morning with a small amount of baby rice mixed with fruit puree. He forcefully vomited a grey colour sick. It can't be anything he has eaten as he has not eaten anything grey. He has also had the same things to eat for the past 2-3 months, including the rice and fruit. The only thing that has changed is: a) we just picked up his erythromycin prescription and it was a different brand to usual. (for increasing gastric motility) b) his omeprazole suspension that's made specially in a hospital 60 miles away was delivered to our medical centre yesterday and it was room temp. It needs to be kept in the fridge. The pharmacist who made it says it should be ok but he's not sure as it's a special and there's no literature on it. Well I'm glad I got such short sighted answers! He's been on solids since 2 months as I was told to by my paediatric gastroenterologist consultant. He has had reflux since an op when he was 6 weeks old for pyloric stenosis. So thanks for the stupid answers but I have done as I have been told by the PROFESSIONALS!!! Also when did I say he had food in his bottle? He has it via a spoon like regular babies. I have even been told to skip a bottle and add a 3rd solid in (he will only get 7oz milk per day) but I refused. Callum cannot tollerate liquids very well and that's why the solids. He was failing to thrive without the solids. Oh my god whats wrong with you people? He's MILK INTOLLERANT!!!!! He cannot breastfeed. Only 1 half decent answer!

Chris replied: "Do the doctors know you have been feeding your baby rice and friut since he was 2 months. No wonder he is poorly."

DJJD replied: "It could just be the fruit puree colouring the vomit. Try mixing a little in a bowl and I think you will see the rice turn the same colour. The brand name on the erythromycin is not all that important. Its just the same medicine, made by a different company. I don't know much about the omeprazole, so feel I shouldn't comment on this. Give your 'out of hours GP service' a call for some advice, or NHS direct."

Daisyhill replied: "How long has he been on solids? It is not recomended till 6 months for a good reason...and especially not fruit puree...baby rice wouldnt be so bad...but either way I would go to the hospital and take the medicine too. It could be an allergic reaction."

boud replied: ". I know some parents don't listen to their health visitor and start weaning at 4 months but giving rice and fruit to a 2 months old? The reflux is certainly a way to show you that he's not ready for solids. Edit: you will get what you consider stupid answers if you don't explain the whole story. How are we suppose to know about your baby's condtion if you don't mention it?"

Wendy replied: "I would vomit if I was given fake milk in a bottle too. That stuff is poison. See your midwife who will tell you how to restart your milk supply."

lovelylittlemoo replied: "I had to wean my prem baby very early like you as they thought that this would help with her severe reflux - it didn't - just got better with age we are just weaning her off her meds at 2. I have bin sicked on in every colour imaginable all day long for months! I would guess that the colour is either due to the fruit mixed with his milk in his stomach and partially digested or possibly was due to his medication as you thought? If he is sick more than usual I would ring the hospital pharmacy (should be cover as they would need someone there to dispence at all times) and ask for advice with regard to the temperature of the Omeprazole - I'm surprised that the pharmacist didn't call them to check for you. If the temperature made no difference and the vomiting continues I would contact your Dr's office out of hours GP or NHS dircet if you are in the uk and explain the situation for advice. Hope he is feeling better soon x"

emsiep replied: "im not sure its the omeprazol, my little ones been on this for a while and its never caused grey vomit, i also doubt it was the brand of medication they all have pretty much the same stuff in them- although if it happens again its prob worth looking in to. could it be the stomach contents, i know when they are sick so much some odd looking things can come, perhaps it was the stomach acid this could have been greyish, if it happens again smell it (sounds discusting) but if it smells v. acidic then thats probably your answer. i wouldnt worry about other peoples comments your doing whats best for your baby, they dont have a clue what its like for reflux mums!"

My baby has acid reflux? My son is 4 months old. He has very bad acid reflux. Doctor prescribed Omeprazol. I give this medicine to my son for already 2 1/2 months. I read that Omeprazole kills good bacterias in the stomach and effects normal development. Also I read that acid reflux is normal for babies and it is not necessary to give medicine to baby to cure it and that acid reflux is a sign of a normal development of babie's digestive tract. I am confused and have no idea what to do and how to help my baby.

malica replied: "Spitting up is perfectly normal. So long as your son isn't bothered by it and continues to gain weight, there's no need to treat it and he'll grow out of it on his own. Our daughter spat up a lot. And not just after meals - any time at all. Until she was about 7 months she was constantly wearing a bib. But it never bothered her at all so we waited for her to outgrow it. If however he's not gaining enough weight, or the reflux is painful to him (some infants will scream bloody murder because it hurts so much), then one needs to weigh this against the potential risks of medication. I'm not familiar with this medication so I don't know how serious of a risk it poses, but this is something you can talk to your doctor or pharmacist about."

raslp1 replied: "My first son had terrible reflux and the doctor prescribed Zantac when he was only a month old. I gave him a little of the medicine, then stopped because I personally thought he was too young to be on such medication. Basically, it is more of a nuisance then a medical problem. You just have to do more laundry and he did eventually grow out of it. I don't know if you breastfeed or formula feed, but one thing I did that helped more than anything was switching his formula to Enfamil A.R. Lipil. It is a thickened formula and is made for babies that spit up a lot. Hope this helps."

springofexpression replied: "Acid reflux is common, but not normal, in babies. Your baby is in pain and you need to treat it. For now, I would keep him on the medicine as long as he is still showing symptoms. However, there are safer medicines for acid reflux. Even tums can be helpful and safe for babies. You might want to ask your doctor for a safer medicine. Positioning can be very helpful in controlling acid reflux. Try putting your baby to sleep on his tummy (don't worry about SIDS at this point, he'll be rolling soon anyway.) The tummy position makes it harder for his stomach acids to wash up into his throat while he sleeps. Also, keep him upright, preferably on your shoulder, for a few minutes after every feeding. Avoid putting him in a sitting position since that might squish his tummy and push up the acid. The acid reflux could be caused by allergies, so you might want to look at diet, especially if your baby has skin rashes or frequent diahrrea along with the acid reflux. If you are breastfeeding, you could try eliminating common allergens from your diet. Many babies are allergic to cows milk and react to the proteins in their mother's diet. Other common irritant foods are chocolate, spices, broccoli, and wheat. See the link below for tips on an elimination diet. If your baby is bottle fed, he might be reacting to his formula. If you use regular formula you can try switching to soy or hypoallergenic formula. Many babies who are allergic to cows' milk are also allergic to soy, though, so if his symptoms don't lessen in one week after switching to soy, you may need to try the hypoallergenic. Whether you are breastfeeding or bottle feeding, it will take at least 5 days to see a difference, because it takes quite a while for milk protiens to leave the body. If you try changing your or his diet, make sure you stick with it for at least a week, preferably two, to check for changes. I sure hope you can get your baby feeling better. There's a lot you can do for your baby besides giving him strong medicine. If you can't change the medicine, however, you should be able to give him acidophilous suppliments to help build up the good bacteria in his stomach. I believe you can crush a tablet and mix it with milk. If I remember, it's safe for babies, but you should probably check with your doctor. Good luck with everything."

◄♥RN♥► replied: "a degree of reflux is normal; more than that, not normal; the meds should not kill any bacteria that are good in the intestines (stomach is tough place for most bacteria to thrive), and it shouldn't effect normal development; sounds like u need to talk to your doc and get answers to ur questions.."

So I am 5 weeks pregnant and taking medication...? HELP! I am taking 'OMEPRAZOLE MAGNESIUM' 20mg.. One everyday at night in anyway can this harm the baby I am going to the doctors in a few days about the tablets but hes got something else coming for him lol... thanks..

Medicine, which is a problem, I do have Trazodone, but im afraid ill overdose, my friend takes them and hes out for DAYS, if i take three, and i weigh 110 pounds, is that good? Ill sleep like a baby, and ill forget all about not having my baby. I also have ativan, skelax, Omeprazole, and i dont have a clue what else, besides tylenol, and sudafed maybe. so any ideas guys? Thanks for the help! Okay, assholes. Great. thanks alot. You know im bi-polar? Why dont you take a gun and blow your F$ck!ng brains out? I asked for help. not B!tching. and actually i was with her for a VERY long time, and she just happens to be the first girl i ever kissed. the girl i lost my virginity to. and lots of other things. I understand your ability to insult, because your simple minded. You honestly had nothing to do except insult some kid you dont even know on yahoo answers? LOL Life Fail. Go kill yourself, and do the world a favor please. As for the people who helped thank you very much, I didnt take the pills. and im still extremely sick. I cant exercise. Actually, im so sick i cant help but sleep. it solved my own question. lol. Thanks.

Pat replied: "The best thing would be excerise. And a massive meal after. Forget the pills, they ultimately aren't solving anything."

peppernspice replied: "ur feeling suicidal cos a girl u like isnt interested in you!?!? wow. thats probably the worst thing that could ever happen to anyone on this earth that makes them feel suicidal!!!!!! u seriously don't deserve this life that god has given you! instead of getting something to help u to sleep all day, why dont u just save yourself the trouble and Kill urself instead???? there are ppl in africa who dont have FOOD and are starving to death there, and ur having suicidal thoughts cos of some immature shit with a girl? innocent people who have families to take care of are dying in sri lanka and afganistan thanks to the war, and you want to commit suicide cos a girl rejected you!! way to go! keep it up!!"

lolit replied: "i guess you are suffering from anxiety or depressions .and this usually happened to people who are sendentary lifestyle .or even suffering from hormonal imbalance .i suggest you to visit your psychologist for counselling some therapy including verbal expressing your thoughts and fears."

Where can I buy cows milk and wheat free baby foods? My 3 month old has been diagnosed with milk allergy and wheat intolerance. He started solids early as he has servere reflux. He is on Nutramigen prescription milk and is swapping to another one tomorrow (i forget the name). As the proteins are completely broken down in the new milk. He is also on the highest dose of both omeprazole and domperidone. Our consultant told us to give just baby rice for the time being but he won't eat it any more! All baby foods I can find contain milk powder or wheat! He can't have soy milk as it is the unbrokendown proteins he cannot digest. He cannot have fruit at all as they are one of the top child allergens. And I'm in the UK :)

california_beachbum92 replied: "probably whole foods or trader joes"

mimi replied: "find ones that contain fruits"

Carl W replied: "Go to your local health food store or organic market."

ladymarmalade replied: "is the a whole food in your area? Otherwise perhaps online if you don't have a organic food shop in your town"

ray replied: "boil veggies and blend it (make it yourself). You can use carrots, peas, black eye peas, green beans, etc just put them in a food blender and serve then to your child."

citroen c2 owner replied: "if you have a waitrose store go there they do all kinds of wheat free foods"

Wyla replied: "You can get rice milk from the supermarket here in UK. Why not try mixing your own meals for him with some wheat free cereals, rice for a start. Also have a word with your local healthfood stores and check on line to see what other mothers are doing.. There will be very many out there coping with your situation. Good luck. I am sure your baby will thrive. Here a re a couple of we sites to get you started"

Ryan's mom replied: "One the safe side you would be better off making your own baby food. Carrots, mashed potatoes (Made with a little of the milk-free formula), mashed green beans, etc. That way you know exactly what is going into your baby's food. Get some Gluten-free cookbooks."

sporregar replied: "Usually a milk allergy is to cow's milk. Try soy milk that you can get from fairly any grocery store. Make your own baby food that doesn't contain wheat."

Tina Bena (Cultural Name Expert) replied: "Go with Beech-nut baby food and look on the back they ALWAYS say whether they contain "Wheat, soy, milk , or eggs" :*: GOOD LUCK :*:"

playsteinway replied: "try a whole foods market in your area as those usually have specialty items like that. You could also ask your child's doctor because they will certainly be able to tell you where they can be obtained from."

Ulcer medication and pregnancy? Hi everyone! I need a little help! I'm 23 yrs old and I'm 5 1/2 weeks pregnant with my first baby... but there's a problem. I started having ulcer symptoms about 5 months ago at the beginning of my divorce, did my research, and come to realize that i have a "gastric ulcer" located on the back side of my stomach. I have horrid stomach pain (which moves to my back and told me where the ulcer was located), weight loss, nausea, etc. It's pretty bad. To keep it from getting worse, i went to the doctor, told him what made me believe that i suffered from an ulcer. He ran some test and prescribed the wonder medication "Omeprazole 20 mg" with 5 refills to treat it. Well, to make a long story short. I'm not sure if it is safe for me to take during my pregnancy. Especially so early on. I don't wanna chance anything with this baby but i feel that the stress and pain off of this ulcer isn't helping the pregnancy either. I had a spell with this ulcer about 2 hours ago and decided to do more research. I work 2 jobs full time to save enough money to take care of this baby by myself so no time off to go to the doctor. Not much money in the budget, either. So any help would be greatly appreciated!!! Especially from a MD, or somebody in the field. Thank you!!!

4months&miserable replied: "im five months with severe heartburn i take doctor prescribed zantac 150 ...the instruction state on it that it is also usedto treat ulcers"

momof2girls replied: "you will have to make time and see the doctor if it gets bad it can hurt the baby and besides you have to do prenatal visits as well so I would make the time your health and the health of your baby is worth more than risking"

Having a Baby Girl replied: "Im 21 weeks pregnant, and 20 years old and I have an ulcer as well, after a few years of taking prescription meds I decided to try something all natural called probiotics. they worked, but regarding taking them during pregnancy, I called the advice nurse and she told me that its really not a good idea to take anything in the beginning of pregnancy until you get the ok from your doctor. some of the few meds pregnant women can take are just benadryl, tylenol, and vicodin if necessary. I'd talk to your dr. right away and then get the ok to take something all natural because there are too many unknown substances in pills now that could contribute to birth defects."

can these meds cause vaginal itching? i have been taking Laromin Clarithromycin twice daily and Ezipol Omeprazole once daily for the past week. two days after i started the medication (which was given to me for a simple flu) my vagina started to feel very iritated. it burned at first and then after a day or so the burning was less and it just started to itch really bad all the time. when i'm at home i cant control myself and i scratch over my clothes. i clean it every hour or so with baby wipes and i shower every other day. could this be a yeast infection and how do i get it, if it wasn't from my meds? i stopped taking my meds last night. it's only been 8 hours but the itching still hasn't stopped. i can't go to my gynaecologist because he's in Kos and i'm studying in Rhodes (two greek islands that are 6 hours away from each other). Plus, i have no money to pay a different doctor here and i have left my prescription pad with my mother to renew it, since it expired. i wont be returning to my home for another ten days. should i wait that long before i do something about it?

I Need Some Competition replied: "Yes it is probably a yeast infection get some Monistat and it will clear right up. I had this problem as well while taking meds and I had never had a yeast infection before and I flipped. The itching sounds so familiar..LOL. As soon as you apply the cream you will feel immediate relief...I promise."

Diabetic Foot Ulcer. Please help! :(? Hi, fellow Yahoo users. I have a question about Diabetic foot ulcers. But first, a history of my 're-occuring' problem. I, unfortunately, developed an ulcer/hole on the ball of my left foot, at the end of June. It became so badly infected, and was weeping like no tomorrow. I bandaged it, packed it up, and kept it as hygenic as possible, up to five times a day. After seeing my doctor, he admitted me to my local hospital, on the 10th of July. A group of specialist assessed my wound, and told me that there was a possibility I'd have to have my middle toe amputated. Turns out that my toe had become swollen and a slightly deeper shade. And the infected nail (That I've had for two years, now) was showing no signs of improvement. I had almost-immediate surgery, where the hole was made bigger, so the surgeons could scrape out as much infected tissue as possible. I was then in the hospital for a further two weeks, taking numerous antibiotics and painkillers as tablets/capsules and through an IV. I was on.. 1: Penicillin. 2: Omeprazole 3: Flucloxacillin. 4: Codeiine 5: Hyoscine-N-Butylbromide. Anyway, I was eventually discharged, which briings me to my question. it's been a week, and for some strange reason, my foot is almost as swollen as when it was badly infected. I've kept it as clean as possible, and kept off it as much as I can. But the middle toe is significantly redder and more swollen than the others. The hole underneath my foot is about the size of the baby fingernail on an average hand. it's got a dull green/rust-coloured soft 'scab' covering. I've made an immediate appointment to see my doctor. But I need advice. Should I return to hospital and risk losing a possible toe that COULD be saved? Or.. I don't know. I'm sorry.. I'm really worried out of my mind. Thank you all for reading and responding. I really appreciate any help I get. Jamie. Hi, everybody. had some luck seeing the doctor at my local surgery/clinic. I've been put on Flucloxicillin and Amoxycillin syrups. And I've got an appointment on the 11th of August, at my local Orthopaedic clinic. My foot is still very much reddened, swollen and bloody 'orrible, but I'm managing. Really very kind of you all to help me. I can't remember the user's name on here, but I'll try putting pillows under my legs at night. Thank you very much. Jamie x.x

Emerson replied: "You should consult your Doctor regarding that matter, because any alterations on that part of your body may lead to further complications. Since you’ve mentioned that you’re a diabetic person. I preferably and advised you to be more watchful regarding on the status of your health. You must follow and consult your physician regularly for you to prevent further complications."

Wendy Jean replied: "Hmmm, green does not sound good. There is an infection there, which will need to be thoroughly looked at by the specialist, sorry. Donot delay."

Lorna D replied: "You have to put yourself into the hands of the professionals, they wouldn,t amputate a toe if it wasn,t strictly necessary.Hope it all goes well for you .xx"

whitefords replied: "As someone who lost all the toes on one foot in similar circumstances my advice is don't muck around ... get to hospital as fast as possible. Infection is hard to contain I was in hospital for 2 months before I got rid of the infection so the sooner you start getting treatment the better you will be. It wont just go away by itself Try this site lots of good advice by fellow diabetics in the U.K. Good Luck"

Arbba replied: "Diabetes is one difficult sick, i think you can try this treatment:http://www.diabeat.cc"

zyllee replied: "Don't wait. Just go to the hospital. Don't mess around when it comes to infections when you are diabetic. Better to be safe than sorry."

kmouse47 replied: "Go back to your Doctor. If you will use a pillow under your legs at night it will help with swelling. My wife was sent to have custom sandles made when she had ulcers on her feet. We thought her Doc was nuts but did it anyway. Two months the ulcers were all healed. She had to wear them all the time even in the house. They were made to take all pressuer off where the ulcers were on the feet. If you have ins. it may pay for them. Best of luck."
