About Penicillin For Strep Throat in Questions
I have mono and am on penicillin for strep throat, can I get the H1N1 vaccine? I live in Canada, tested positive for Strep Throat last Friday and started Penicillin immediately, today I found out I also tested positive for mono. Can I still get the H1N1 vaccine? Or do I need to wait until I feel better?

J B replied: "They do not recommend you get any immunizations when you are ill. You need to wait until you are well."

Tony replied: "You should wait until your infections were gone to expose your "weak" body to a vaccination."

ladyren replied: "In your place, I'd call your doc. Frankly, I'd wait until your strep was gone. Your immune system has enough to do right now. Wait till next week when you feel better, or call your doc."

TweetyBird replied: "Wait until your current infections are resolved. You have both a bacterial and a viral infection. You can't be given flu vaccines while you're on antibiotics and you should not receive vaccines when you have active infection or are otherwise ill."

Lisa K replied: "It really depends on how you feel. Being on antibiotics is ok with the flu shot or mist (but if you were on antiviral medicines you should not get the Flumist- the shot would still be ok). The Centers for Disease Control advise that vaccines are ok if you have a mild to moderate illness, or are recovering from illness but not if you have a severe illness. I would leave it up to you and your doctor to decide depending on how ill you are presently."

When should i take Penicillin for strep throat? My doctor gave me penicillin for my strep throat and told me to take it every 8 hours. My first pill I took at 12pm. Does that mean I have to wake up at 4AM every day until I'm finished or can i wait till 8am or 9am to get on a better schedule? Or should i continue waking up at 4am? Thanks

kirish667 replied: "Well you could wake up at 4 AM each morning but I would find that highly annoying. You should wait till 8 or 9 to get on a better schedule but it's your choice if you would like peaceful sleep without waking up at 4 than go on the 8 or 9am schedule but if you don't mind the 4am part than continue waking up at what ever time you prefer."

Could I have Penicillin resistant strep throat? I put something deep in my mouth this weekend that just came out of another girls mouth so I figured that’s how I got Strep throat. It was a very aggressive strain because I went from feeling fine to death bed sick (ulcers in throat, head, join pain and 103 degree fever) I thought I would die before I could get to the doctor the next morning. I went to the doctor and tested positive and got a shot of rocephin and a bottle of penicillin. She did that 5 minute test and it was bright stripes positive in 3 minutes. I did not start feeling better for about 12 hours and within 16 hours the fever broke and 24 hours the yellow green puss balls feel off of my tonsils. What is upsetting me is that just as my fever broke I felt one of the puss balls in my tonsils leak and then my neck glands just under my jaw blew up like golf balls and now my ears hurt and my neck is stiff. Now is this just a last fu from being sick or is the penicillin not killing it and now I have Meningitis? Also, now that I Also, now that I am “healing up” I have a horrible cough that won’t go away. Is it common to get a cough after? Can taking penicillin give you a cough? I do know that my glands are killing me right now and I don’t know why since It didn’t happen till after the fever broke. The Mom is the best, she rocks!

Chaz replied: "Call your doctor immediately. This infection is going to into your ears unless treated quickly and agressively. This happened to my brother. Act fast ok?"

The mom replied: "Relax. Antibiotics take a couple days to fully kick in- so you actually starting showing some improvement fairly quickly. You can thank the shot of Rocephin for that. The lymph gland swelling is not anything big, you have a known infection, and the lymph system is on alert. The increase in lymph fluid and the increased production of white blood cells to fight it off are the reason those are swollen and tender. You should have 10 days worth of antibiotics, and you need to take each and every tablet. You aren't going to feel wonderful for a few days yet, possibly not for a full week. And you did not get strep throat that quickly, the incubation time is somewhere between 2-5 days. Anybody who has had strep throat in the past month could be responsible, since you can shed the virus for a full month after you recover- and if it wasn't treated it's highly likely you will. You are describing the typical course of illness for strep throat. It is nasty, which is why folks who have it fuss so much about it. The five minute test normally reacts within 2-5 minutes, your reaction time was not any quicker than most. It's not likely you have an antibiotic resistant type of strep either, or you would not have seen the improvement at all. So just relax here. Keep taking the medicine, drink loads of fluids- until your molars float. Eat what you can get down, and rest. You should continue to improve from here on out. The lymph glands may stay swollen and tender for a few weeks, but that is also normal. They may well go back down as you finish the medication. Just chill, you aren't dying. You probably do feel like it, but you won't."

Susie replied: "Give it a little more time. Can't imagine what you put in your mouth. Sounds gross."

Doxycycline replied: "It's very uncommon for the strain of strep that causes strep throat to be resistant to penicillin; for this reason, penicillin is still considered the best drug for this illness."

How much would Penicillin cost for strep throat? A retired doctor I know told me that my throat was probably sore, and I have a rash because of strep throat. I asked my mom about antibiotics, and she got really angry and told me we didn't have the money. I might have enough saved to pay for the prescription, but I want to know how much it usually costs?

LoneRanger replied: "Penicillin is very cheap, like $5 for a bottle, but you need to have a doctor write a prescription, and a doctors visit is not so cheap....$50-100. Try an old home remedy....Gargle as much as needed with salt water. just put a teaspoon of salt in a small glass of warm water and gargle with it. It will help the pain and help you heal."

rachelxelite replied: "Strep throat is not something to mess with. You need to get a throat culture done and antibiotics before it can start to affect your kidneys, heart, or give you rheumatic fever. Antibiotics can cost up to 15$."

Susiecat replied: "You really need to see a doctor for a throat culture. Some pharmacies - Target, Walmart, actually will give you generic forms of penicillin for FREE if you have a prescription."

Lea replied: "Penicillin is very cheap. 90 tablets will run no more then $20. Call up individual pharmacies and ask what their no insurance price is."

How long does penicillin take to work on strep throat? My strep throat test came back positive and I have been on penicillin for almost 3 days. The doc and the internet both say penicillin should start to work within 24-48 hours but I haven't noticed any improvement at all.

christine w replied: "Call you doctor and check on the notes in the perscription box if there is any info on there. Or you could be like me as penicillin does nothing to me apart from bring me out in a rash. xx"

alianna_hodiya replied: "Wait a another day or so and if youre throat is not feeling any better go back to ur dr."

sassy lass!!! replied: "i had tonsilittis and swollen glands in my throat and took antibiotic wit penicillan in it after 2 days i was better if yours aint gettin better either go to chemists and get a throat spray or go back to the doctor"

Rednell replied: "it took me until the fourth day (of a week's course) for the penicillin to really kick in, and make a noticeable difference. Sounds like it's taking a similar path with you like it did with me."

How quickly should strep throat symptoms respond to penicillin? I am on penicillin and am concerned that I don't feel that much better. I had been told by a relative that improvements should be remarkable and immediate, even after a dose or two. That has not been the case. I have been searching the internet and have not found much information on strep throat from the PATIENT'S point of view - e.g., what he/she might feel after taking antibiotics, and what the perceived effects and benefits should be. Days 1 and 2 I felt sore throat, ear pressure, swollen glands, sinus infection, no coughing. Day 3 I went to the doctor and tested positive for strep (rapid test). That evening I took my first dose of 2x daily 500 mg penicillin VK (ten day course). Now is the morning of Day 5 (only 4 doses so far - meds started in the evening of Day 3 ) and I feel about the same. Given that it is Memorial Day weekend, do I have the doctor paged to get me on something else? Or does this require patience? Please cite your source of information or expertise.

angel p replied: "i've had strep throat twice. i did not not take penicilian. i drunk green tea with chinese honey and in two days, it was gone!! you need to buy the green tea with the chinese symbols on it."

the crusader replied: "You certainly should have noticed a drastic difference by day 5. You should have the doctor paged or go to a walk-in clinic that is open to get another prescription. Since this antibiotic isn't effective against the strep, you're basically walking around with an infection that's just getting worse. One of the main complications of untreated strep throat is meningitis. Call your doctor immediately."

How long should the area be sore for (after getting Penicillin shot for strep throat)? I got the shot on Monday, and it's Wednesday now. The area is still sore. :-(

Ed replied: "Why did u get a shot? Just get pills..."

how long will it take for strep throat to heal with penicillin? my daughters got strep throat, i took her to the doctors yesterday, and she recived pencillin from the doctors. how long will this take to heal? and what can i do to help the pain? please help.

Jo replied: "Vary, about a day to a week (especially if your daughter had strept that resistant to penicillin). You can give her NSAID (ibuprofen mostly help but i like corticosteroid better), salt water / bethadine gargle, watch everything she eat, give her vitamin C, etc."

GOSHAWK replied: "The antibiotics, assuming the strain of Streptococcus is not resistant to penicillin, should take from 24-48 hours for your daughter to become non-contagious. Full recovery will take more time. Be sure she takes all of the antibiotics. The sore throat will begin to resolve as the antibiotics do their job. Gargling with warm, salty water will help. Tylenol, etc. can help stop the pain. There are over-the-counter drugs to alleviate pain if it is more severe. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist for one that fits your daughters needs."

Strep Throat + Penicillin VK And Nursing? After having a sore throat for about three or four days with no other symptoms I decided to go in and be sure it wasnt Strep. The throat swab came out Positive. The doctor put me on Penicillin VK, I just took my first pill, but what I'm wondering is how safe is this for my Breastfed 1 yr old? She only gets it about 2-3 times a day now, and the doctor said it was safe, just wanted to see what you other moms thought! :D Also, Since I have it, even though she hasn't shown any signs (aside from she just got over a cold) Should I take her to her ped. monday to have her cultured? Thanks for your input!

I do care! replied: "You can breastfeed while taking most anti-biotics. BUT be carful as the anti-biotic does pass through breast milk. Meaning that your baby will also being receiving the Penicillon also. She may have a reaction to this AB. But she will develop thrush in her mouth. If you can avoid breastfeeding while taking the AB I would. I breastfed my son will taking AB in the first week after birth and he got the worst case of thrush in his poor mouth. He was miserable. And so was I for feeling guilty that I gave it to him, although I was of course not quilty. And neither would you be if you decided to continue to feed while on the AB's. I hope you feel better soon?"
