I have just been put on Prednisone for bronchitis, is it safe? I do not like taking medication but he said this was for the inflammation-I have only taken 2 pills and there are 16 left. I have read about this medication and am not too happy with what I have found out. Anyone have any suggestions?? I would like to just stop taking it but do not know if it is safe or not?

Danielle replied: "Prednisone is relatively safe in short term doses like the one your on. Please take the medication as described it will do wonders for your breathing/inflammation. The side effects your read a bout are long term."

Zaara replied: "it is okay for a week or so. it will get rid of the inflammation and you will be better. You might have mood swings. Side effects come out when you use it for long time like months and years. Doctors do not prescribe this for long time ever."

Dinkbong replied: "Ive been on prednisone twice and have not liked the reactions both times. It is a steroid and acts as an anti-inflammatory, but along with stopping the inflammation/allergic response, it also stops everything else: Like your bodies ability to fight infection. Both times I took prednisone I was irritable, saw massive hair loss, and my eat/sleep cycles were disturbed. To say the least, after about 4 days of treatment I stopped taking the meds. I was already having so many adverse reactions that I didnt notice any kind of withdrawal symptoms. Good luck and feel better!"

emmamba replied: "Prednisone is a synthetic corticosteroid drug that is usually taken orally but can be delivered by intramuscular injection and can be used for a great number of different conditions. It has a mainly glucocorticoid effect. Prednisone is a prodrug that is converted by the liver into prednisolone, which is the active drug and also a steroid. Prednisone is particularly effective as an immunosuppressant, and affects virtually all of the immune system. It can, therefore, be used in autoimmune diseases, inflammatory diseases (such as severe asthma, severe allergies, severe poison ivy dermatitis, systemic lupus erythematosus, ulcerative colitis, rheumatoid arthritis, Bell's Palsy, Crohn's disease, pemphigus and sarcoidosis), uveitis, various kidney diseases including nephrotic syndrome, mononucleosis [epstein barr virus], and to prevent and treat rejection in organ transplantation. This medicine may also reduce the sex drive. Prednisone has also been used in the treatment of migraine headaches and cluster headaches. Furthermore, the pharmaceutical industry uses prednisone tablets for the calibration of dissolution testing equipment according to the United States Pharmacopeia (USP). Intravenous application may be employed for cerebral inflammation, as in the period attacks caused by multiple sclerosis."

My doctor gave me Prednisone for bronchitis and it has given me an insatiable appetite.? I do not know what to do about this as I am meeting a friend for the first time in about 3 weeks and do not want to gain weight. I can't seem to get enough food, any suggestions?

DrChung replied: "Eat veggies and fill up as much as possible!"

Charrie' B replied: "My mother used this product, and it blew her up also. Maybe you can be given something else in it's place."

DAB replied: "Drink a LOT of water. Same thing happens to me when I have to take it. It will go away...but water fills you up fast. If you HAVE to eat a lot of something - eat celery."

Cute W O the E 7 replied: "yup it did the same thing to me as a kid try mashed potatoes, filling, easy to make, good when your sick thats what i used to eat"

justwakingup replied: "a "friend" eh??"

Ericka replied: "drink plenty of water and take fiber pills to stay full. warning: water + fiber pills = frequent trips to the bathroom for a #2"

ladeda replied: "Ah, prednisone. I have to take that for weeks whenever I get poison ivy, and yes, I understand the appitite. I usually gain weight while on this medication, but I have found that drinking a lot of water keeps me somewhat full, so I don't binge as much. For now, keep high fat foods and junky foods out of your house so that you can't eat it whenever you get hungry. Try veggies or fruits, even nuts are great! Resist temptation as much as you possibly can (but I know its really hard!)."

OrientalCat replied: "Yup, that good old steroid will blow you up, and give you a big appetite, too. Be Sure to Taper off of this medicine before you completely stop taking it. You are going to be puffy, no matter what, but do try and eat raw veggies."

Tay C replied: "I had Prednisone for 3 months! I gained 3 pounds when I was all done. Through the whole thing I gained up to 5-6 pounds, but losed it. I tried to eat later in the day like breakfast at 11:00 AM, Lunch at 2:00-3:00 PM, Dinner 7:00-8:00 PM. I tried to keep it all like that. At the end in about a week to one in a half weeks, your body will get back to normal and you will lose that much weight. (At first i gained weight then I losed all of it then close to the end i cheated then I losed it again.) Good Luck! Tay"

Ames replied: "since this drug is a steroid, that is why you are exeriencing the appetite issue..talk to your doctor about the issue you are having with the drug"

kyle replied: "Someone I know took prednisone for a skin infection and ended up gain at least 60 lbs, they still ate and exercised the way they did before the infection. I don't know but it could happen to you. Just putting that out there."

triciawin87 replied: "Yeah, it will do that to you since it is a steroid. Make sure you eat well. Don't eat huge amounts of food at every meal. Eat small amounts of good food, often. - Eat more whole foods, more fiber is satisfying. It should help curb your appetite. Whole foods also have more vitamins and other healthy substances. - drink lots of water. - foods that fight fat: cottage cheese, egg whites, oatmeal, peanut butter, fat-free plain yogurt. good luck!"

Marilyn replied: "Yes, I was on prednisone for bronchitis also. I was only on it for 6 days but I ate everything in sight. which was ok, because I could use the weight,"

Bo-Bo Brains replied: "Prednisone is *notorious* for giving people the munchies. You'll gain weight, I guarantee it. You'll also grow hair in places that you're not use to :-) NOTE: some of the weight gain comes from water retention, so avoid salty foods."

Hannahbelle replied: "I have an auto immune disease and when it flares I have to take the Prednisone also. I can't get full....water dosen't work...want food, food, and more food. I do find that after yo stop it, you lose the weight. Ask your Dr. (I work for 1) for a different drug. There are lots of others out there."

kitiyapron p replied: "Don't take it , go back to your doctor and tell him . Ask for an alternative prescription . Generally doctors have many medicines to choose from"

pinkylillypink replied: "i hate them tablets, my doc keeps saying its not them that makes me gain weight and there is no other drug they give me instead...........its so horrible and nothing you do makes the weight any better ive tried and tried gone from 8/10 to a 16 im disgusted with it! they shouldnt give them out so freely!"

Dr Frank replied: "The course will of necessity be short and the effects will wear off quickly. There is little you can do in the meantime."

minty359 replied: "Common Side Effects: Check with your doctor if any of the following side effects continue or are bothersome: increased appetite indigestion nervousness or restlessness Less frequent or rare: Check with your doctor if any of the following side effects continue or are bothersome: darkening or lightening of skin color dizziness or lightheadedness flushing of face or cheeks hiccups increased sweating sensation of spinning Always Notify Doctor: Less common Decreased or blurred vision frequent urination increased thirst Rare confusion excitement false sense of well-being hallucinations (seeing, hearing, or feeling things that are not there) mental depression mistaken feelings of self-importance or being mistreated mood swings (sudden and wide) restlessness skin rash or hives Additional effects: Side Effects that may occur when this drug is used for a prolonged period of time. Doctor put me on prednisone for bronchitis/asthma, first day take 4, 3,2 etc,,how should i space the dose? i am to take 4 today,,unfortunately my first dose wasnt until 3 pm,,,,when should i take the rest of the 3 pills? Thnx! Actually,,,i called my pharmacist and he said to take all 3 pills at once,,,,so then i called another pharmacist and she also said i can take the last 3 pills together,,hmm.

Jen M replied: "Really it is best to ask a pharmacist. You could try to wait an hour or two and then take the next and then wait an hour or tow and take the next dose. You might have to wake up in the middle of the night to take the last dose. But, really check with your pharmacist, that is what they are there for."

Amber J replied: "You are supposed to space them every 24 hours usually. It's ok that your 1st dose wasn't until 3pm. They say that you should try to take them in the morning because prednisone has a tendency to keep you awake. Be very careful while taking prednisone, taking too much or too little (depending on how long you take them, your dosage, etc.) can cause serious problems. It's not a drug you want to mess around with, so it is best to speak with a pharmacist."

Bronchitis, Pneumonia, Strep, Prednisone, Running? Okay so I am a sophomore in high school who is a very competitive runner. About 4 weeks ago I started experiencing a cough but this is somewhat normal for me because I have allergies and that's what I assumed it was. About a week later, I started weezing so I went to the doctor and found that I had bronchitis. My doctor put me on z-pack for 5 days but a couple days later I started feeling really sick again and I got a chest xray and found out I had pneumonia. They put me on amoxacilin but a week later I came down with strep throat. So the doctor took me off the amoxacilin and put me on prednisone and a double dose of z-pack for 5 days. Finally I am feeling better but I stopped the prednisone 4 days ago (no taper) and I've been experiencing extreme muscle soreness and fatigue. Could this be withdrawal symptoms? I also started running on monday. I went 15 minutes on monday, increased it to 20 minutes on tuesday and ran a half hour today. I feell really good but I start to feel sick the last ten minutes. I also have open sores on the back of my throat left over from the strep. When will I be back to normal and be able to run competitive again? Also how long does it take for the prednisone to leave the system?

Lilly replied: "You are putting too much strain on your heart by trying to run so soon after being sick with bronchitis and then strep. You really need to rest and give your body a chance to recover."

Prednisone for bronchitis ... dying here? I just wanted to say I hate the drug. I think it's the worst drug in the world. I can breathe, but is it worth it when I'm suffering from the worst heartburn ever in the world, I'm bloated, I have a headache, I want to kill everyone around me, etc. Luckily there are only 3 days left. Just wanted to say those things. I didn't ask a question ... Anyone else ever been on prednisone - what do you think? I'm on zythromax and advair as well. I think I waited too long to go to the doctor because 1200 mg. of guaifenesen wasn't touching my congestion. And I can't sleep - and my face is red ... stupid prednisone. Captain: Prednisone is an anti-inflammatory - that's why they prescribe it with strong anti-biotics.

Dr who replied: "prednisone short term is ok but in the long run it will damage your organs. And yes lots of people get heartburn with it,I would never take prednisone for bronchitis to many other rx that is not as harmful for you to take like antibiotics"

kawaiikitty133 replied: "ask your doctor if you can take TOBI. It a medication taken through the nebulizer, it used for Cystic Fibrosis patients so your insurance might give you a hard time and it is extremely expensive"

Captain SBDA replied: "The reason you hate prednisone....is because your doctor is a moron. Prednisone is an immunosuppresant. It's designed to treat autoimmune diseases. So unless you are suffering for an autoimmune condition, there is no reason you should be taking prednisone at all. Taking drugs that weaken your immune system when you need your immune system is not a wise choice. Antibiotics and antinflammatories are used to treat bronchitis. Why your doctor would ever put you on prednisone I don't know."

Prednisone for bronchitis? the prescribed dosage is 1 tablet(50mg) once daily for 6 days. I took the first dose before bed lastnight. I slept well, however, i woke up with my heart feeling like it was beating hard. Is this symptom a serious reaction or sideaffect for this med?

sheralyn h replied: "Prednisone is supposed to be taken in the morning and yes your heart beating fast is one of the side effects since it is a steroid"

Bronchitis??? I have been feeling awful since the begining of december, I have shortness of breath, tight feeling in my bronchial area, caughing white thick mucus but not a constant cough, and my sinus stuffed. doctor gave me a z-pak, nasonex, and prednisone 20mg the first three days and 10mg the following 4 days today ...I had a nasty reaction to amoxicillin which was prescribed before I almost went into anaphylactic shock. anyways do you guys think this is truly bronchitis? I cant even sleep since this gets worst after 8pm for some reason. I'm also using the albuterol inhaler which helps alittle but still thightness in my chest area. I went to the doctor and she gave me zithromax because alergic reaction to amox... she doesnt think I went to the doctor and she gave me zithromax because allergic reaction to amox... she doesnt think I have pneumonia since I dont have a fever and my lungs are clear, she says its more like bronchialspasm due to having bronchitis. I dont know I have never had this. thanx guys for any advice you can give me it would be highly appreciated.

hyabusawife replied: "If you have only been on zithromax for 4 days it has not had time to work yet. It's a bacteriostatic medication, which means it changes the compostion of the bacteria so that it cannot replicate. That's why zithromax works long after the 3 day, or 5 day treatment. Drink LOTS of fluid. Use the albuterol for relief. Use a expectorant to break up the mucous. The prednisone is to decrease the swelling of your airway. Take that exactly as prescribed. Bronchitis does cause chest discomfort. You will start to feel much better in a few days if you take the medications as you were prescribed."

michelle replied: "It could be- that's how bronchitis does me- except I do not cough anything up. I am also allegoric to amoxicllin- never the reaction like you had- I hope you are O.K. Anyway, did you go back to Doctor and get a different antibiotic- bronchitis will not clear up on it's own. If you have had this for a month you could have pneumonia- not trying to make you feel worst. You really need to get a chest x-ray and figure out what really is going on. Best of Luck! :)"

Carissa replied: "I usually have bronchitis about once a year. What you have sounds like bronchitis. Some antibiotics simply don't work for some people. When prescribed a z-pak, I might as well be taking candy. The problem with sleeping is common. I sometimes put vicks vapor rub in a pot of boiling water and breath in the steam for about 10 minutes. It will help break some of the mucus up. Just don't do it too close to bedtime, as the breaking up of mucus causes coughing for a couple of hours. Hope you're feeling better soon!"

I have Pneumonia and Bronchitis, is it safe for me to take all my prescribed medicine and benedryl and pepcid? I went to the hospital and found out i had pneumonia and bronchitis, i was prescribed "Prednisone" and "DoxyCycline" and also was prescribed "Benedryl" and "Pepcid", was wondering if anything would happen to me by taking all these drugs, i never was a fan of taking multiple pills, is it safe to take all of this at once, on the labels it says to take them, but i just took them all combined?

Gracinda replied: "those medications do not tend to interact with each other. prednisone: steroid for the bronchitis DoxyCycline: antibiotic Benedryl: antihystamine for the bronchitis Pepsid: to protect the stomach just take them as prescribed"

Will Prednisone 10mg 2 times a day for 3 days give me side effects? I went to the doctor and was said i have bronchitis. So, they gave me an inhaler and 10mg of prednisone. Will that give me any bad side effects even with that low of a dose?

ncherefnyc replied: "Common side effects are: increased appetite indigestion nervousness or restlessness the more rare side effects are: darkening or lightening of skin color dizziness or lightheadedness flushing of face or cheeks hiccups increased sweating sensation of spinning"

magikalpixie21 replied: "probably not for only 3 days, but it's a horrible drug & i refuse to ever take it again. i took it for leukemia when i was young & it made me hallucinate, have nightmares, crave salty foods, eat A LOT, gain A LOT of weight, get angry & irritable really easily, & i was very sensitive & emotional."

helen_parnellberry replied: "You don't say whether you're asthmatic. We usually give a short course to asthmatics when they get a chest infection. A short blast of prednisolone over 3 days won't hurt you. Make sure you take them with food. Hope you feel better soon."

NAJAM replied: "clinically short courses of steroids r least likely to cause side effects"

iJoey replied: "Yes mild side effects. I use to give it out in the Military, from my Medical background. I would recommend that you stay well hydrated and don't over exert yourself as you may feel like Superman while on it. You may not even feel anything. You will be okay! If still unsure call the Doctors office to get more info. Good Luck!"

GalantaEire replied: "NO you wont get the side effects in only 3 days, it takes weeks. i have lupus and ive been on that dose before and you'll be fine. none of the abd side effects (weight gain, swelling..) can happen that fast it takes weeks/months. if anything you could have trouble sleeping or small things like that, but dont worry."

Does the medicine Prednisone affect a male's erection? Hello, The doctor has prescribed me to be on prednisone and amoxcillin for a sinus and bronchitis infection combo. Will prednisone, which is a steroid for my lungs due to asthma and bronchitis, affect my erection strength and the number of erections I will have while on the medication? Thanks

Charles C replied: "I had to take prednisone at one time for asthma but thankfully have not taken it for many years now. I could detect no interference with erections but it is bad medicine and should be taken only for the shortest possible time. The way my last doctor prescribed it was a burst for about ten days and then off. Previous doctor had advised a maintenance dose, ie taking it uninterruptedly. This is less desirable because it carries a greater chance of building a dependence."
