Prevacid - vs- zantac? my infant son is on this perscribed by his peds doctor.. my main concern is someone told me the following: Zantac is a to reduce acid reflex and Prevacid is to inhibit acid reflex... what are they each for, and what one works better ? my sons on prevacid.. now but thinking of switching if its defeating the purpuse?

Dave C replied: "they both do the same thing, but prevacid is stronger. Follow your doctors prescription, no matter what is said here on yahoo answers."

thundercloud replied: "my son takes zantac (it helped with colic too) for acid reflux, he has been on it since 2 months. i tried taking him off of it but it wasn't good so i put him back on. i don't think i would have him take prevacid unless he had to."

gardeniagirl07 replied: "I'm certainly not an infant but if your pediatrician put your son on Prevacid, I would leave him on it. I have taken both kinds of medicine and speaking from our personal experiences, Prevacid works a whole lot better on chronic gastric reflux disease. We have tried many different brands but Prevacid and Protonix are the ones that work the absolute best for me. Nexium worked on our teen son's ulcer and my husband takes Pepcid. So, even in our own family, different brands of medicine work better on each one of us. Basically, these medications all do the same thing...they all reduce or inhibit the overproduction of acid. It means pretty much the same thing, so don't change your son's medication without consulting your doctor first. This doctor had a reason for putting your infant son on Prevacid...it works really well. Our son had colic as a baby and we almost had to threaten to strangle our Pediatrician to get him to give our baby any medicine. He did not care that our baby was hurting or that we were missing too much sleep, so we sort of had to fuss a lot to get him to prescribe something for our son when he three months old. Two parents that were working and having to get up many times during the night for his bottle feedings, diaper changes and then having to rock him until the colic settled down was really hard on us. We would not have traded our boy for all the money in the world, but no one likes staying up all night long with a sick baby. You are very fortunate that your baby's Pediatrician put your son on Prevacid! I hope this has been of some help to you and that your baby grows out of this condition. Congratulations on your baby boy! ☺"

Zantac Vs. Prevacid?? Anyone had to move their baby's from Zantac to Prevacid? My daughter has been on the Zantac for 2 weeks and was getting better but seems to be having the symptoms again. Her GI MD said we can switch to the prevacid. I know prevacid is stronger but, I want to make sure it is just as safe for my baby's tummy. She is 11 months old.

Not feeling creative replied: "I wouldn't worry about it - antacids are made to *protect* the tummy not be harsh on them. All the things you normally consider "harsh" on the stomach are things that cause the stomach to be more acidic (coffee, tylenol, OJ...) and the acidity is what irritates the gut lining. An ANTacid will make things less acidic and will be more protective."
